Nan cy !\Ioore, Mother Superior of the Husqvarna International Training Center. presided over riders' meeting and gave a sh o rt rund own on racing economics, illustrating that while the Tibblin ~IX club was doing a super job with organi zation. track prep. trophies, etc., they were going down the hole financially. She made a plea for the riders present to bring extra riders next time to bolster the ranks of the unfortunatel y wimpy turnout. It was too bad for such a fine set-up as Carlsbad is. Anybod y who stayed home missed the race of their lives as the pack that showed up today raced on the brand new GP course tha t has been set-up for the U.S . 500 GP to take place on J uly 14. It was rough, to ugh , an d everybody I talked to thought it was bitc hin '. Rolf's philosophy in his MX program is to try to make champio n sh ip calibe r rid ers out o f eve ry body by runnin g tw o lon g European-type m otos instead of three short Amerikan-goofy o nes. T hat wa y you bui ld u p your stre ng t h and sta rn in a, and as soon as yo u mi gh t kn ow it, yo u're playing the sa me game that has made DeCoster an d Mik kol a th e kind of guys they are - fast l! T he Mini class showed that it has some strong and co nsistent rid ers for suc h little guys. Danny Dilkey (Hon) pulled firsts in both mote s for the uncon tested win. But back in the small p ack, Mark Guinto (Hon) mad e consistent second place finishes to nail that spo t. as did Kenny Hashimote (Ho n ) with third. Even though the kids didn't use the whole track, it was really something to see them going up, then down, Carlsbad's banzai hill. I don't think th at I saw anybody lose it too badly. Fo r th e most part, everybody avo ided the crash situations and wen t on to ride fast. Then again, th ere were the other times. Lik e in the 125 Juniors. One part of the new tra ck is a sharp, short downhill. whi ch is about 50 feet from top to bottom with a lumpy, sandy, off-camber left hand turn. To make this turn, y o u had to have it all together. It was either turn or burn, and some of the antics that went on were incredible. In the 125 Juniors, firs t rno to , a who le 101la guys lo cked it up and de cid ed to pile together at the bottom . Funny. But, while all that was happen ing, Mark Aney and his Bultaco mad e sho rt work of the incred ibly o verw helm ing nu mbers of Honda ride rs , and p laced himself in the to p spot eve ry moto . Ho nda- mou nted Scott Davi es was able to ge t as close as secon d to Mark, and another (yo u guessed it) Honda ride r, Kar l Kah n, got third, after du elin g it ou t wi th Ron Laffranc hi [Hon] wh o had to settle for fourth. Peter O'Rourk (CZ) ha d to bea t o ut a really big crowd of 250 and Ope n Ju niors to stay ahead and keep it th a t way and, in the same process . fight fatigue and an uncooperative bike to stay u pright. Fred Knapp was a very consistent second, and Bob Totten (CZ) who put most of the he at to Pete, took third. Sandy Rufford (CZ) took the O pen J uniors, but the big surprise was Dino Sampo on his Triumph as he put thumper power to the ground over t he peaky two strokes, taking a remarkable second. The small pa ck of Intermediates and Experts was co mb ined to m ake thi ngs more interest ing, an d they di d. An dy Baines (Mai) really moved out as he h ad either Dave Doss (Hus) or Ch uck Ro use (CZ) hanging on his tai l. A ndy go t fir st in th e first mot o, But in th e seco nd , Doss put on a hard charge to take it away from him to make up for th e DNF tha t sopped his Husky in the first m o t o. Everybody was poo pe d when th e last moto was ove r, nat ura lly. T hey raced the way it sho uld be d on e - th e right way . Winn er s go t tr o phies as losers co ntemplated winni ng. Nancy did a great job wit h t he sco ring an d mos t o f the run nin g aro und, and Rol f was really a great guy to mee t in person . -' Racing with Rolf on the Carlsbad GP course Mike Pa lhegri (Hon) does t he artful dodger route around a dude who used to be leading in the 125 In t ermediate race at Uncl e Ro lf's Yurpeen-style MXery. By Rex William Reese CA R LS BA D, CAL., JUNE 29 Cool ocean breezes made life bearable at Carlsbad as the rest of Californ ia fried, but the action ou t on the track was hot as 125Junior Mark Aney (Bul) swept through and ran away fro m the rest of a Honda-infested crowd, He picked S ominat in the UJ O/l UJ UJ a: X UJ a: my I tripped on down to San Diego for next adven ture .
