Payn e did it by totally dominati ng the 250 moto cross , taking a th ird in 125 motocros s, and finishing in the to p ten in bo th Grands Pri x. despite bi ke tro u bles. Lorie Watson. who had been fav o red b y m any to take t he O ve ral l w in. was bo t hered b y the flu al l weekend , but still made a creditable showing. Motocross competition. ru n Saturday and Sunday morning pr oduced so me exciting battles. particularly in t he first mota of t he 125 Experts. Lorie Wats on charged into the lead fo llowed by J anene T u rt o n . Honda-mounted Wats on kept the lead for th ree la ps be fo re relinquishing it to Turton, th e Bultaco bu llet, She was o ut in fr ont fo r only th ree laps before Watson regained the lead . All th at time. they were less than a split sec ond apart and that's how th ey fin ished. Bothered by t he flu and crashes, Walson wasn' t in co ntention for the tw o remaining motos and T urt on won easily. Aggressive riding by J uana Madrid (Suz) moved he r into second Overall ahead of Nancy Payne. Payne hopped off her Hon da onto a Maico and m ade a shambles of the 2 5 0 class. Jan ice Kline (Han) led for awh ile in the first mota until her tranny got troublesome. After that it was Nancy 's show. Heads-up riding by a te lep hone line-pe rson fro m Oregon na med Na ncy Tho m as moved her into secon d Ove r all, ahead of Kline. After the motocross it was off to the sandwash for th e Gran ds Prix . T he first rac e, for 250, 100. Minis and Gran n ys , was run for an ho ur. T hen t hose girls in co n te n t ion for the top p rize swi tc hed back t o the 125s for a two-hou r bash. 125 winner Lorie Watson made 33 la ps of t he almo st four mil e co u rse. which works au t to o ver 125 miles. During the 125 event. sh e c ra shed ag ain. Stockton. runni ng fourth . sto p pe d to help her. Although she would be unable to wal k after the rac e. Thomas can ti nued, still ridi ng fast. Cherry got an award for good sportsmanship. After the races were over. everybody wa ited for what seemed like an ete rnity for the Grand Prix results. P. U.R .R. (Po wde rp u ffs Unlimited, Riders a nd Racers) had th e resu lts in three hours, un like t he Viewfinde rs. who took three weeks. T he Overall winner was to receive a Can-A m 125 from Gary J ones. a co mplete riding o u t fi t from No rstar an d o the r co n tinge nc ies. Nancy Pa yn e loo ked t o be in shock. but she soon reg-ai ned her co mpo sure and motored off in to the su nse t on the new bike. She soon ret urned ho weve r, for Sue Ha ll had g a t h e r e d a n almos t in ex hau stib le co llec t io n of con tin gencies for the winners. P.
