Anybod y who stayed home missed the race of their lives as the pack that showed up today raced on the brand new GP course tha t has been set-up for the U.S . 500 GP to take place on J uly 14. Rolf's philosophy in his MX program is to try to make champio n sh ip calibe r rid ers out o f eve ry body by runnin g tw o lon g European-type m otos instead of three short Amerikan-goofy o nes. T he Mini class showed that it has some strong and co nsistent rid ers for suc h little guys. Danny Dilkey (Hon) pulled firsts in both mote s for the uncon tested win. But back in the small p ack, Mark Guinto (Hon) mad e consistent second place finishes to nail that spo t. as did Kenny Hashimote (Ho n ) with third. Even though the kids didn't use the whole track, it was really something to see them going up, then down, Carlsbad's banzai hill. I don't think th at I saw anybody lose it too badly. Fo r th e most part, everybody avo ided the crash situations and wen t on to ride fast. Then again, th ere were the other times. Lik e in the 125 Juniors. One part of the new tra ck is a sharp, short downhill. whi ch is about 50 feet from top to bottom with a lumpy, sandy, off-camber left hand turn. To make this turn, y o u had to have it all together. It was either turn or burn, and some of the antics that went on were incredible. In the 125 Juniors, firs t rno to , a who le 101la guys lo cked it up and de cid ed to pile together at the bottom . Funny. But, while all that was happen ing, Mark Aney and his Bultaco mad e sho rt work of the incred ibly o verw helm ing nu mbers of Honda ride rs , and p laced himself in the to p spot eve ry moto . Ho nda- mou nted Scott Davi es was able to ge t as close as secon d to Mark, and another (yo u guessed it) Honda ride r, Kar l Kah n, got third, after du elin g it ou t wi th Ron Laffranc hi [Hon] wh o had to settle for fourth. Peter O'Rourk (CZ) ha d to bea t o ut a really big crowd of 250 and Ope n Ju niors to stay ahead and keep it th a t way and, in the same process . fight fatigue and an uncooperative bike to stay u pright. Fred Knapp was a very consistent second, and Bob Totten (CZ) who put most of the he at to Pete, took third. Sandy Rufford (CZ) took the O pen J uniors, but the big surprise was Dino Sampo on his Triumph as he put thumper power to the ground over t he peaky two strokes, taking a remarkable second. The small pa ck of Intermediates and Experts was co mb ined to m ake thi ngs more interest ing, an d they di d. An dy Baines (Mai) really moved out as he h ad either Dave Doss (Hus) or Ch uck Ro use (CZ) hanging on his tai l. A ndy go t fir st in th e first mot o, But in th e seco nd , Doss put on a hard charge to take it away from him to make up for th e DNF tha t sopped his Husky in the first m o t o.
