Morris (not the cat) Malone Wheelsmiths AMC 250 Experts Fast Fred (Wailin' Walti to you, buster) flies to ACA Open Production win E.C. & WALKER Photos and captions by John Ulrich By Ste wart B. Sapicoff IRVIN E, CAL.• JUNE 28 Mini Intermediates Kurt Sofka, J r. (Hon) and Lenny Giger (Han) were having one of the meanest kno ck down-drag out fights of the entire evening at AMC's MX race out at O.C.l.R. Friday night. In mota one Sofka grabbed the holeshot with Giger breathing right down his back determined not to let him get away with a first. bu t that still wasn't enough as Sofka held it on for the good old black and white. Moto Two was all Giger's though, as he held the lead fro m start to finish with a charging Sofka trailing behind fo r a tie in Overall points between the two. The thi rd an d desisive moto saw Giger take a sudde n lead b ut it was for only o ne lap and the rest was Sofka all the way. Gil Smith (Hus) made a clean sweep of the Open Junior race as he took an unchallenged first in each of the three motos with the exception of the second one. In that moto Tony Pena (Mo n ) held on to it for the first three laps. only to lose it over to Smith on lap four and settling fo r second Overall while thi rd was taken by Mike Stalons. The 250 Expert race was once again taken by Wheeismith Engineering's mad Morris Malone (Mai), who blew off the competition by a huge lead just like he always seems to do. Second wen t to Dave Boydstun (Su z) who may start off on a so mewhat of a lesser than fantastic pace but gets faster an d faster as a race progresses until the point where he just plain cooks. He still could not get anywhere near Malone just as Clay Musol f (CZ) could not manage to catch Boydstun and was forced to be happy with a th ird for the evening. Rick Bean (Hon) did it just about as easily as Malo ne . only his flying wins were within the 125 Expert range. Bean took the first with Ron Turner (Yam) holding it down with a safe second and Brad Dutoit U&B ) finishing up in third. Results in the Results Section. TYRAN II 125cc MX (Franch ises now available) Distributor Pipes for: E.C . tuned exhaust The race of ACA's Riverside day was Open Production. Here Bob End icott (Kaw) leads 350 winner [t he classes were ru n combined) Dale McCreary (Yam) in turn six of the first lap, before the Open b ikes pu lled away. Fred Walti (Kaw) is fourth, Mike Parriot (Kaw) fifth. Endicott and his right knee still have the lead, but Walti (154) and Parr iot have moved up, and pressure hi m on the second lap. Mike McClain exits turn seven of the 250 Junior GP race first lap, with Mike Baeder, Harry Klinzman and Wally Karpynec (all on Yamahas) following. They finished in that order after some mid-race swapping. -. - Harry won the 350 Junior GP race to kind of make up for it. He only wishes ACA gave trophies. Oh, yeah, before the phone calls from Bakersfield come in, Ron Pierce (not shown) smoked the 250 Senior class. Two laps late r Walti is first , End icott is well beh ind, and Parriot's b ike has gone away . Interviewer to Walti: " Fred, what makes you so fast?" " Well, John, t here's nothing to it. I just got a Californ ia Kawasaki, some Pearce parts, some NO plugs, and started winning." Sure Fred , sure . In the 250 Junior GP race it was Klinzman and ace pit race r Baeder do ing the dicing as McClain ran away and hid . Baeder, who has been passed by Klinzman is seen here with a better turn 7a line than Klinzman, will pass him for second before a % mile straight is up.
