'''' Cooper Motors 110 E. Santa Anita Ave. Burbank. CA 91502 Desert Racing Association hosted the Iron Mountain Snake Chase this weekend, and while many were chasing the Snake, Benny Padilla and Kevin Hasten were caught up in playing the racing game called, "Dicing for Do llars." At 9 :00 a.m. a good sized turnout of riders (about 400) were off heading to the smoke about two mi les out on a little knoll. At the bomb it was Benny Padilla aboard a sponsored 250 Gringo with Kevin Hasten p ushi ng his 400 CZ right behind on the righ t. Jim Fra ncis straddling a 360 Yamaha was challenging for the' lead o n t he left and it was hard to tell who was faster at that point. Pau l Greenwood was p utting his we ll rested 400 Husky back into mo tio n as he has been out of racing t he past three o r four months, The lay -off was not affecting his riding as he hit the bomb running fourth Overall. Fo llowing Greenwood was Jim Ir b y riding a 360 Yamaha, John Steen aboard a 250 Honda, and Howard McCasland on a 400 Husky, all hitting the bomb at the same time. It looked like there was going to be some good racing going on with this group, as Greenwood, . Irby, Steen and McCasland were aJl looking at the Amateur money. Past the smoke the course j umped int o a neat little sandwash that was shades of the early 1960s, when a wash was 50 feet wide, had walls on both sides and you were able to sit on the seat, (due to the lack of whoop-de-docs} and drop your big TR-6 into fo urth gear at about 95 MPH . The TR-6 has been replaced with mo re sophisticated equipment over the yea rs and at the halfway point there was this strange sound ing thing ca lled a "Gringo" way out in t he fro nt wit h a rider cal led Benny Padilla on the pegs. So mehow, "Padilla" and "Gringo" j ust don't sound like the perfect match but te ll that to Hastens and all the o ther guys doing h and stands just to stay in Padilla 's dust. Kevin Hast ens was hold in g do w n a st ro ng seco nd with J ohn Steen running third an d Bill Sa ltz man n ow m aking a remarkable recove ry fr om a bad start in fo urth . Paul Gr eenwo od , after having a bo ut wit h a large ro ck, (the ki nd that reac h out and relieve you of your brake pedal and other non-essential parts of your scooter) , was holding down fifth as they topped the hills. He was having one of those hair raising rides normally encoun tered on a tricky downhill with no brakes. Ji m Irby was now in sixth place and trying to hold off Howard McCasland who was not ready 10 give Jim first Open Amateur without a batt le. Speaking of battles, Gus Paull, ORA's Number One Open class rider was having a little skirmish of his own.
