On the 22nd lap , while a rider change kept Jensen and Vanderpool close, Gary shot into the lead o nly to have to pull in after leading only two laps. (He hit one of the big tires and bent in his shift shaft.) It cost him nearly a lap to get back out but he p icked up the pace to stay on the same lap with the leaders. Hlebo had wo rked h is way from a 12th pl ace starting lap to h old second, then d ro pped b ack a lap j ust at the hal fway point. It was at this juncture tha t some had though t he was rig h t behind the leaders. The rooting really didn ' t make it any better when after passing them, in the very next co m er , he fell and dropped back to his third spot once again . Finishing first Novi ce were Chris Ghione and Dave Bellina while Bruce Fredrickson and John Martinez teamed on a ratty BSA pump to take second four laps ahead of Shawn O'Daffer and Tony Licata. It was a six way battle in the 250 class with the Morrill/Simas Yamaha doing its usual leading "cho res. Rick Hocking sat out the Denver National and rode a street Honda in front of Bob Visiti ng firemen - Mark Smith, on his Honda up from California, hosed the Novice opposition on the Sidewinde rs' TT track. (See story page 19) Vickery. Andy Whitaker held off Jensen but that didn't last long. Ho cking "pulled out on the II th lap . Jeff Hallock rode Bob Rathburn's Honda four stroke in to fourth and then Open GP winne r Mike Casling hooks his Norton out of th e lower hairpin at photogenic Kent , WA road circu it. third when Vickery pitted for gas and rider change. The two then dueled for the rest of the two hours and it was Rathburn/Hallock in front of the Vickery Yamaha at the en d with Whitaker and J im Foster in between. Jeff Cole (Suz) won the 125 class by a slight margin over Troy Durham . Cole didn 't get into the lead for good until the 25th lap, b ut had it momentarily for a few laps when the Jensen brothers pitted. That is Jack Jensen ridi ng with b rother Gary. They conti nue d to ru n b ut were eliminated when Gary gave up his rid e and let Al Wood have it fo r a few laps, earn ing disqualification.
