---------------------------------------- ~-~------- Roadrunner II: CRC's best enduro everwith tootsies, eve·n! St ory & photos by Larry Langley WAGON WHEEL CAFE. CAL .• J UNE 9 - It was go od to head out to the desert Friday night leaving behind t h e cold, wet depressing weather. we've been having lately . This was the best enduro CRC has put on so far. The weekend was just perfect, j ust what the desert is all about before the really ho t weather curtails riding. It was w arm , welcome, and bro ught o ut the foxies in dr oves. The first "easy" loo p was just c h a ll e n g i n g enough to give t he Beginners, Po wder Puffers and Minis some mild challenges in the form of not-too-difficult d ownhills, roIling fun Rocks are fine as lo n g as they stay off the t ra il. Check me . momma. c heck me. check me nowl type terrain and a few rocks to give them some practice for the day they will be tackling the harder second loops. O ne of our better Powder Puffers zeroed the loop but most had to work at it a little and lost a fe w p o in t s at one o f t he three first- loop chec ks. T he loop crossed Trona R o ad once . I w as u p se t to find no fl agm an p resen t. It turned out lat er that t he individ u al sent out to m an the flag went to t he wrong road crossing. After a short 33 minute break between loops we tackled the second loop. Since t here wasn 't a three mile speedo check we were expecting a chec k about 3.2 miles out aft er climbing a narrow sw it chback mining ro ad and then dropping into a canyo n . CRC tricked us though. it was waiting down the can y o n a t 3. 6 m iles (24 MPH a verage) and ca ugh t a lot of pe ople la t e. It was possibl e to zero t he check but you had to really hump and not ge t caught behind anyone slow as it was just about im po ssib le to p ass. We didn't get lucky and hit it one min ute la te. To add insult to injury it was a tiebreaker. Team Bultaco also was lat e for t he same reaso n and verbally p rotested to CRC honcho .Jerry McNeal b ut C RC said th e check will stand. Ratsafrass. For the next 20 m iles or so it was a virtual Hare and Hound as the average ki cked up to 30 MPH acr o ss the valley to t he sand hills where it dropped back to a re asonable (?) 24 MPH. Let me tell y ou, y ou had to ride flat out (a t least I d id ) to maintain the average. Th e dust was a probl em and the trail was na rrow wi th few opportunities to pass slo we r riders. The hills were just a blast go in g up and down up o n the pegs as fast as you dared. When the co ur se turned down the can yo ns it w as "wall of d eath " time as we used th e canyo n walls for mind bo ggling berm s. Just ge t up o n the wall a nd gas it and you w ere perpendicular t o the gr o u nd. No w t hat's real fun , folks. Finall y we turned up a canyon and there was the waiting c hec k ca tc hi ng al l those pe ople late. The c hec ke r was j us t flipping the card over out of my minute as I slid up to the check all locked up. Just made it ! I was really having a good ti me. The re st of the loop was somewhat tamer but a welcome rest wit h just one more check to catch the sloppy timekeepers. Then it was haul ass time into the finish of a good enduro. I should mention that the checks were manned (womanned?) by so me of the best looking ch ec k-too tsies I have ever seen. Also Clint Sweet should be complimented for an absol utely first rate job in clocking in t he checks and speed changes. My speedometer never was off of their mil eage m o re than one-half of a tenth. Quite a change from the Greenhorn of a couple of weeks ago ! The Pasadena MC sho uld re cruit Clint as their layout director. I heard of two zeros and five or six one-point-loss scores (m ine included), so it was possible to zero the course but you had to have y o ur stuff together to manage it . Everyone I talked to had a ball ex cep t fo r one poor soul who tried to really give the CRC photo guy a go od picture and did a bad n umber doing all kind of things to his shoulder. I'd like to see a copy of th at picture! The co urse marking was just superb . Plenty of ribbon and a whole bunch of arrows at each turn with wrong way signs to catch anyone who was blind and missed a turri, It was obvious that CRC put a lot of work into the course and it paid off in a fine enduro. • And this is t he signal for a right turn . f rie nds. 00 Rolf 500 Int.
