It turned out to be Joe Williams - by two points. the fina l lap, j us t m issin g the chance to . take Mu zzy on the lin e . The finish was Muzzy , Oliver and Huey. In one of the greatest disp lays of short track racing , Brad H urs t and his CZ made it plain . that he can deliver un d e r pressure. Hurst battled it o ut with Mark Williams (Kaw) in the Open A Main and came out on top. Williams was righ t on his fender . Delbert Spinney (Bul) and Mike Bailey (Yam) were very close behind. jack Heeter (CZ) won the Trophy Dash. • Last but not least in a new class, The A TC class, yes, ATC Hondas b litzing Rick Burgett got off, pushed, still won both classes, a ro u nd the track, Kevin Norman powered his w.ay to the win ners circle. The end resu lts were much the same , though : Burgett way out in front with Cook second. Bob Plumb (1\Iai) held third all the w ay in this one. Early in this race the hail came again and things were getting worse all the time. The Open class was almost a rerun of the 250 ra ce: Bur gett and Cook in both moros. Cook had some threats in the second round. Ray Crawford (~Iai) and Barney Newman [Mon] had a bailie for second for half the race. Crawford moved up to second twice and fell twice when he got there. He eventually pulled off with m e ch an ical problems. Newman lost a firm grip on second when his engine stuck. Cook inherited the position but was way back afte r a bad start. . Burgett had an unbelievable lead and at one time was spotted on a back corner cutting cookies. He ki lled h is engine, visited w ith friends and sti ll resumed racing with a big lead. R ic k rode like he was b orn in the mud and he cut hi s teeth o n this trac k. The pro gram was set up for three m o t e s, b ut wi th thi ngs goi ng fro m mi se rable 10 worse and th e back h ill section b ecoming almost im pa ssab le, the ref eree ca lled th e last round off, Most of the riders received t he dec ision wi th a sm ile an d the score rs ad de d a sigh of rel ief. Curt Hunte r (Ka w) a n d Bill Bre edl o ve ( YZ) wer e second an d third . • When the first 250 race started it was fairly goopy. Rick Bur ge t t (Bul) and Barney New man (Mon) were fi rst off the line going in to a wide sweeping comer. Burge tt slipped and Newman became the first of many to go down whe n he cu t to the o utside and caught a rear wheel coming bac k o n the cou rse. Mark Estes (Ma i) p iled on top of hi m . Estes got goi ng agai n b u t d ead last. T his tr ac k has a neat, tight, barrel tur n wh ic h can be a bo ttl en eck in d ry weat her. Add m oistu re and it turn s to Crisco. T hey really p iled up there on the fir st lap . Both Cas ey Fa uce tt (Hon ) and Tom Peterson (Yam) were disq ualified fo r cutting across short of the barrel to avoid the sli m y approach. By the second la p Burgert st ill had the lead b ut Bill Cook (Mai) had moved past Tim Wright (Hon) and Marv Azar (Bul) to take over second. Both rem ained in these positions while other riders slipped, slithered and slid behind them. Several bikes were stretcher cases at the end. Dave Bunker (Yam) worked up to third at the flag . Mark Estes [Mai] rode a real catch up race to finish sixth . A few riders were still coming to the line when the second moto got started. CMC trackers at Chico By Rex Backman CH ICO, CAL., MAY 11 Steve Dietz and his Bu ltaco looked like they were on the way This was the special attraction at the Oregon Champ ionships, It certainly was...different. to winning the 360 Expert Han d icap Main, Dietz had taken the lead from Kurt Fator on the fourth lap of the twelve lap event and started to stretch it out over second place rider John Grant. Back in the pack Expert riders Del Silva and Lowell Moura! were passing riders every lap to overcome their 55·yard handicaps. On lap eight Silva moved into second p lace when he passed Grant and started to chase Dietz. Every lap he would cut Dietz's lead a few feet but time was running out. In the final corner of the race Dietz went down and Silva "rent on to win. john Grant took second wit h Moural th ird. In the 250 Handicap, Matt jackson took the lead on the start and held it for t he entire 12 laps to get the win. Doug Swope settled for second p lace and Bo b Grant he ld off Dan Peterson for third . Lo well Mo ural (Yam) won t he 360 Expert Scratch I\lain . Moural, (White p late n um ber 15 for short track) took the le ad and held it. D ick T urner was second on anothe r Ya m ah a. Steve Dietz an d j ohn Gr ant fought it o ut for third w ith Die t z com ing o u t o n t op. j ohn Gra nt ju m pe d to t he lead at th e star t of the 250 Expert Sc ra tc h Main followed by Da n Pe te rson. Peterson took the lead on the second lap an d we nt on to win . Ma ll j ac kso n got his second wi n of the night in t he 250 Novice Scr atch Ma in. jackson led fro m star t to finis h over second place Bob Gibson. Rich Hammersmith (Coop) m oved h is way up to third after a poor start. In the 200 Novice event, Bruce Koistinen took the lead at the start followed closely by Bruce McMorrow . Koistinen went on fo r the wi n wi th McMorrow gelling second and Darrell Van Nat ta -t ook third on a last lap pass. Gary Cooprider (Hod) took the lead at the start of the 100 Novice Main. On the se cond lap Ken Gray (Hon) took over the lead and went on for the win. Cooprider finished second with Tom Green riding a consisten t race to get third. • Results in Results section.
