Don England, owner of 395 Cycle Park, donated the track; the Huntington Racing ry Association provided the emergency first-aid unit and personnel all in order that proceeds could go directly to the Jack Rabbits Band of the Victor Valley Senior High School to help pay for their summer trip to Brussels, Belgium. The track set up was better than average 395 fare, with real effort placed in ' the traction department. Neve rtheless, as the day wore on, and despite a repeated pass with the water truck, conditions degenerated some and dust came out, The 3/4 mile track was well put together, except one spot where the track ran by a big pile of junk tires, steel and wood. If a rider fell off into the pile, it would have been Band-Aid City for sure. Earlier that day, during the riders meeting prior to the ra ce, it was noted that over 110 riders had showed up, wi th 400 spectators. During the meeting, the 395 - track officials gave their standard talk, emphasising good sporstmanship and fun ; and also th reatening tj' hang anybody they felt was cherry picking. There were a million guys in the 125 class, so it was divided into two divisions. In the first division, Herb Carbaugh (Hon) managed to hold off the rest of t he pack. He was followed by Dan Dittman (Suz) and Gary Praster (Hon). In the sec ond 125 division, desert MX w un derkind, Butch Wade (Hon), just blew everybody away with a grand slam winning ride. He was followed by Johnny Greenway (Hon) and Richard Boten (Suz). Brian Summers (CZ) led the 250 second division first moto for a lap o r two, seemed to be holding on, but he fell d ow n an d lost it forever to Bu tch Wade, who after blowing everybody away in the 125s, came back on a KX250 to do some more huffing an d puffing. In the second moto, Butch wa s running away from everybody, until he crashed with another rider. Butch then started blasting everybody into th e weeds without even looking back! He worked his way back into the lead and won it! Butch also cleaned the last moto, Scratch Main event this week on the SoCaI speedwa y circuit. Mike Rooney wins second straight Scratch Main By"Sneaky" SACRAMENTO, CAL., MAY 10 For the second time in as many weeks, Sacramento's Mike Rooney won the Scratch Main. Mike was first out of the gate and never looked back as Norm Denny and Alan Christian (in order) followed him. Ron Smalley watched the finish from t he infield after a spill on the first lap. Frank Cook · has to be permanent Division One material after win ning his first Handicap Main. Starting from the zero yard line , Frank won every Handicap event he rode. Second wen t to Mark .Eckles from the ten and third to 40 yarder Mike Rooney. Re no's John Cunningham, the SRA (North) high poi nt rider for 1973, m ad e his first ap pearance of the young season (two weeks go ne) and failed to earn a transfer spot in his heat race rides. John had not ridden on the new track before tonight . George Carter won the Div. Two Main with Jerry Bowers second. After two weeks, they each have a first and second in Division Two Main events. George was moved 10 yards (to the 20) and Jerry 20 yards (from the zero) after one week of racing. • Results in Results Section. After the half time show by the band, things started to roll again. The Open class was co m ple tely swe pt by Paul Knarb, 1-2-3 on ' his CZ. Co mpleting the Commie bike clean up was Tom Lathrop (CZ) an d Craig Fowler (CZ) . Von Peterson (CZ) was on his way to a grand slam in t he Expert class in the first two motos. In the last m o t o, Randy Scott (Mai) put it on him , spoiling Von's otherwise good day. Von ne tted first Overall any how, despit e Scott 's charge. After it was all over, it was trophy time for the winners, complete with trophy too tsies to do the give away ho nors. T he school band m ade about a thousand dollars out of this event: one more step to that trip to Belgium. Now, lessee, here.. .that means only 29 • thousand left to go. . .
