May 11 The Sou th Bay Spe edway professional half-mile race w as a Rick Hocking show from start to finish, with one excep tion. For this first time th is season the ra ce was slated to pit the ' nation's top three Juni ors agains t . each o ther on the half-mile. Hank Scott came in un nounced from Hixon, Tennessee. John Gennai was there and Ric k Hocking was ready and waiting. Scott,. younger brother of Gary, cras hed on the second lap of practice and then came back in the hea t race but failed to gain a transfer to the Semi. Gennai, wh o has been unab le to put toge th er tw o strai gh t eve nts wi th out some kind of me chanical tro ub le th is seaso n, had it happen again in prac tice and w as out fo r the night before ti me trials cam e aro und. So the fan s and th e cycle press will ha ve to wait until a t leas t n ext Fr id ay at Asc ot, o r San J ose on Sunday for th e firs t match betw een the three tha t are bidding for " Rooki e o f th e .year" honors this season. Ho cking and Pat McCaul cam e up as th e two hea t race winners. Hocking's heat m ar ked the return ' to dirt track acti o n o f Eddie Mul de r, wh o has been mis sing du e to m ovie work and an injury. Ed di e gain ed a th ird behind Tom White an d ahead of Terry Do rsch . McCa ul got off to a good start in his heat an d left the racin g behind hi m . T om Rockwood, riding H·D fo r the second time, passed both Frank Gillespie and Eddie Wirth on the final tum to take a come-from-behind second at the finis h. Hocking wa s surp rised only once during the night. It came in the Dash when he looked like a sure winner. On the last lap, Gillespie, running last, passed Rick, Bob San de rs an d McCaul to take it all for one of the wildest wins of the nigh t. In t he final, Ho ck ing was out of the lead on ly on t he first lap when McCau l again go t an o th er perfect start. Hocking too k o ver o n th e second lap an d went on to win t he South Bay feature for the sec o nd tim e thi s season . Ron Moore and Gill esp ie ra n wh eel to wheel th e en tire 15 laps in th e d uel for secon d wi th Moor e wrapping it up o n th e final turn. Close behind was an o the r duel for fourth be tween Wirth and Roc kwo od . T he spot cha nge d four times w ith Wirt h winning out after so me wild slidi ng by both riders. The J unior m ain event was a 10 lap dash betw een Gary Tonda and Skip Aksland. Tonda rode a near-perfect race to lead all the wa y by in ches to win his first professional main event. Steve Eklund scored his third straight Novice main event win, ta king the lead away from Ari zo na's Butch Bear o n th e second lap . Elbert Turner moved up midway in th e race to take sec ond with Beard holding on for third and his best fin ish thi s year. The Novice final saw T ravis Petton Jr. crash on the n ext to last lap , knocking down and breaking up a record nu mber of hay bale s on the first turn. He was n o t injured . Novices and Juniors join the Ex perts this co ming Friday night at Ascot for th e "Regional" h alf m ile an d then will wa tch fro m th e sidelines the Na tional Mile at Sa n Jose on Sunday.
