Blayl ock co n ti n ued to race alt ho ugh h e realized his ef fo rt was for n au gh t. Sw ard and Blayl ock were running very close fo r th e fin al lap and th ere was much anticip ation in the pits as the fini sh drew n ear. Coming in fo r th e chec ke red n ag, Sward pulled ahead of Blayl ock who had perhaps co m e to the concl usion th at h e was out o f it. The final straightaway with spectators every where was too much for Sward to resist and he pulled th e Husky up in to a gian t .wheelie. Wow ! Gas it ! I'm w inning! And t hen . . . Ba ing . .. baing . . . baing .. . over w en t t he H u s k y i n a gi ant c l a u d o f - d u s t -e nd o -s pe c t a c u l a r spectator-freaking -cras h! Blaylock motored calmly b y to fini sh altho ugh it d idn't count. Sward walked over to his sled (which was lay ing down idling perfectly - goes to show you what a well-tuned machine is cap ab le of after 100 m iles of torture). Getting back aboard, Sward made it to th e finish lin e just ahead of Leon ' Sackman who, rrealizing what was happening, was real ly pouring the co al to the Penton in v By Marty Gregory MOUN TAIN HOME , 10 ., APRIL 28 With a starting point set up around the eastern boundaries of the Bruneau Sand Dunes Park, the terrain involved in the Jackrabbit 100 was what was to be expected o f an Idaho Rabbit race . .. ro ugh! With very few rocky sectio ns but a constant undulation of shifting san ds and burned off sage brush snags the co urse m ad e standing up m os t the way man d atory. T his landscape for 100 m iles definitely separated the men from the boys. From th e Le Mans star t 25 5 determined des ert racers j umpe d o n t he ir scoo ters a nd the ra ce was underway a t exactly II :00 a.m. o n a clear and windy Sunday morning. Comi ng aro un d ahead of the p ack on the first lap was Dave Blaylock on a RedIi ne -framed Bul o ut of Utah . Dave had the jump on the rest of the guys l~" Bob " Coyote Tail" Sward almost lost his win when he crashed for the finish line crowd while try ing to impress them with a big wheel ie. .an eff or t to capitalize on th e endo o f Sw ard. The J ackrab bi t was o ver. Sward won in a very dramatic fashion and th e beer started to n o w. Of the 255 starters. over 150 finis hed.
