The track was watered well, too well in a couple of places. The sweeper was a little slippery and there were enough splashy spots to mess up the number plates in the early motos. There are some new official faces, too. Jedd Heater showed up with a relaxed "spectator smile," having sold his share of the operation to Denny Howard. Denny's face isn't exactly new - he's been around waving flags of one color or another - but he's now one of the bosses. (The neat blonde in the sign -up shack is Denny's boss.) Partners Joe O'Hailoran and Denny have already made some minor operational changes and are receptive to suggestions and new ideas. First race was the 125 Junior class who really mixed it up. By the time they sorted out three motos of pile ups and breakdowns Doug Robertson (Hon) had put together a first, second and eigh th for the win. Jim Hargrave (Suz) , with a second, first and thirteen th was second. Bill McCormick (Yam) tried to land piggy-back on Mike Feam (Mnk) in the third moto and crashed hard. Next came the 100 Juniors and 125 Intermediates running together. Ronald FaveUo (Yam) took all three for top 100 Junior. Paul Weber (Hon) was the 125 Intermediate winner. Tommy Reed (100 Yam) and Rick Gainer (125 Yam) had a different kind of competition in the first race . Both bikes were running sour enough to sound like one lungers wi th emphysema and they clung together for support until the final lap when Reed's bike gave up entirely. Butch Waymire (Suz) led by a mile in the first 125 Expert moto until he ran out of gas before the clock ran out. Meanwhile Mike Kinnear (Hus) and Barney Newman (Pen) battled it out to see who cou ld make the most mistakes. It was close but Kinnear madethe most costly and his bike loaded up. Newman got the win . Waymire came back to win the next two for first and John Brown (Hon) picked up second. • Kirk Severson (Hus) grabbed the hole shot in the first Open Expert race with Mike Kinnear (Hus) on his heels. This , proved to be the major battle of the ' day , which Kinnear won. Meanwhile, wierd th ings happened all aro~d them. Scott Stouder rode a Mission Impossible Maico. Every time he got on the track it self destructed. In the first race the seat feU off, the second moto found his number plate flapping long before the front shock broke and the third moto it was another shock. Barney Newman (Mon) had his problems, too. After a slow start he got up to third in the first race before his bike balked and he just nursed it to a finish. Hastily made repairs got him off the line first in the second race where he built up a lead of 20 seconds ,before it quit entirely with only two and a half laps to go . Even carefully applied fine tuning with a size 10¥. Hi Point (metric, of course) couldn't coax it back to life for the final race. In the final moto Robin Thorn ton (Yam) broke a rear shock and Dale • Demaris (CZ) just ran out of gas. Sand Hill scrambles By James Brammer BRENTWOOD, CAL., APR. 28 Sand Hill Ranch is the real name of a rustic ranch in Contra Costa County which co-functions as a motorcycle park. It has an ideal surface for short track that packs well when watered. The feature race in Sunday's scrambles was the 650 Expert final. AI Ludwigsen led the start. Behind him were Elmer Gantry, Tiffin Mullenaz, Mike Kane, Bob Masters, Rick Otto, Phil Anderson, and Stephen Young. Within a few laps, Mullenaz was leading by the inside advantage with Ganty beside him. Ludwigsen was third and Anderson moved up to fourth. Rick Otto and Bob Masters were side by side for · the next position. Anderson then passed Ludwigsen and Gantry slowed his pace as Anderson wen t on to overtake the leader Mullenaz. It took Anderson about three laps to get around Mullenaz and he was out front to win. Dennis Davis fell while running second in the 100 Novice final, but recovered more determined than before. He passed riders where he caught them and regained his second place posi tion by the finish. Camm Johnson won with Shann Caddy coming from way back to finish third. • Fremont finallyopens By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., APRIL 20 After two weeks of rain, Fremont "Over.the Hill Gang," Steve Young leading, in a 650 Expert Heat at Sand Hill Ranch.
