The w it & humor o f Papa Wealey But Trium ph won it all last year, la king th ree of the firs t four places a t San Jose. T hey may be dow n b ut not o ut when it co m es to the m ile on the t9th. At least one fast Triumph has been seen lurking around Ascot in recent week s and senior racing citizen Dick Mann has yet to break out his Triumph that n earl y won il all at San Jose last ye ar. T his brings us to Harley-Davidson. Th e orange and black looked good at th e Texas T .T . bu t didn't scare anybody. They have been fast in man y recent half m iles, but not the almighty world beat ers that many predicted they would be. H·D has been waiting since early October for th e mil es and half-miles to cran k up again. During th e off-season ihey went out and recruited riders off of T ri um ph s and Yamahas coast to coas t. One racing leather co mpany looked like an ex cl usive Harley lea th er shop last winter. with one or two do zen suits hanging side by side on the waiting rack. Even Oregon 's Mark Williams got caugh t up in the m o vem en t . He ow ns a Triump h shop and ri des T riu m ph an d Ya maha in d irt events. Ye t his leathers are the official H- D te am combi nation and co lo rs! But lik e Trium p h an d Yam ah a , Harley is n o t wi thout their troub les. They blew so m any mo tors at Day t on a t ha t they had to borrow an eng ine o ui of the frame of Gary Scott's new dirt tracker that was load ed in Gary's truck and waiting to go Ascot racing in California. Now the word is that new engines are awaiting parts. One wonders if Harl ey and Triumph are getting the m, or not getting them , from the same so urce? Yamaha, of co urse , wiII switch from fo ur cy lind ers to tw o for dirt racing. Not b ecause t he FIM told them to, it j ust happens that the team riders like to run dirt track with valves in their engines. Ru mors are that the FIM is checking th is o ut to make sure that the Yamaha twin s are legal, since a question has arisen by th e delegation fro m Poland. It seems tha t tw o Ya maha entries won a rec en t poker run in that co untry . Yamaha gD"S to San Jose and Denver with Kenny Roberts and Ge ne R omero . Roberts nev er got to the starting line at San J ose in '73 , but Rom er o won it o n a Triumph. You might get the idea that t he new Yamaha mile track team is untested at this " point in time:' R a c i n g often c r e a t e s strange rela tio nsh ips. In on e of the heat races last year a t San J ose , Gary SCali, o n a T riumph and Mcrt Lawwill, H·D , were locked in a tight d uel for th e win. Over on the far side of the track , where only un authori zed f ree -lo a d e rs a nd non -tuning p it men ga t her , th e two go t int o tr ouble , Mert's m achine look o ff and made man y atte m p ts to cl im b over th e o uts ide wooden fen ce. Carv went on to win the race . For week s Mert wa s p o int ing a finge r al Gary and telling all who would list en w hat he thought happened . ~ a prot est was ever riled wi th th e AMA, however. Thi ngs go t so hot before th e day was o ver th at even Gary's old teammate, Gen e Romero. wa s pointing fingers bUI nOI filing any protest, Scott denied any kn owl edge of what th ey were talking about and took home over tw o thousand dollars for his day's work, Now Gary and Mert are teammates for Har ley-Davidson, along with Gennai] the Brelsfords, Beaucham p and many other s who will be on the pre -race favored brand at both San Jose and De nver. Ro mero is still gri tting his teet h _ a nd has le ft Gary and joine d Kenn y Roberts. Wha l a di ffe re nce o ne sho rt ye ar can make in cycle racing. Mile t rac k racin g always has a lo t goi ng for it but t he May 19 t h San Jose race appe ars to have mo re than usual. T he track peop le are so confide n t o f a goo d program that the July 7 mil e Na tional on the sa me tr ack finds t ickets fo r th e eve nt o n sale o n th e 19 th. If Ihey would ha ve !.ad the 191h tickets on sale last year at th e mile they cou ld have sold il out righ t then and t here. T hat's how good il really is wi th st rong sup po r ting rol e. bei ng played by Mert, Gary, Gene and th e res I who w ill gat he r fo r the friendly festivitie s o nce again this month in the city at the bot torn of t he Bay. •
