WANTED tops Peaceful Cove Hill By Marty Gregory WE BOISE,IDAHO,MAY 5 Don Swanson, aboard a Honda Four, became the first man to ever reach the top of the new climbing hill at 'th e "Owyhee Motorcycle Clu b ' s P e a c e fu l Cove club grounds. Having the best footage in the 45 event , also, Swanson crested the previously unclimbed hill before a large crowd and received the cli mber's favorite applause.. '.th e honking of many van horns! Over 40 climbers from the Northwest showed up to do battle on the big hill on the southside of Boise's IT track. Among the notables on hand was "the old man of the mountain," Lydian Ascenzi, with his venerable In di an s. (No, Martha... those aren't the same Indians you can buy with t rai ning wheels at your loc al bike shop!) Lydian ran to the n umber two spot in the 45 inch eve n t and wou nd up fourth in the big bike contest. The hill has only been used the past couple of years since Ascen zi went over the other one across the track. With the topping by Don Swanson today, it looks like the club will have to find a tougher one! The hill used in today's co nt est has a large ledge at the 200 foot mark and spectacular flips were the order of the day. One fellow lost it so hard t hat his bike broke in two at the steering head an d bounded to the bottom in two pieces. ..the spectators leaped, flew and otherwise scattered in a big hurry! Ever see so meone on foot go d o wn a hill WFO? In the 45 Novice contest, it was Alan Pettit taking top honors and Elwood Ryland came in the number two spot. Don Swanson's Honda twin took the day "for the 45 Experts with Lydian in second and Barry Kolbe getting third best footage fro m the unwilling hill. Bob No rman dominated the 80 inch Novice event with Jim Dexter an d Alan Pettit (Agai n?) foll ow ing up. T he n ca me the big moment as Don Swanson foun d just the righ t groove through the ledge and boosted his machine over t he top for the win! Chuck Hodson had second best distance in the 80 Expert and consistent Barry Kolbe took another third . They only climb at Boise once a year and most of these tough, but friendly, fellows will no doubt be on hand next year! • Results in the Results Section, ARE I • LOOKING FOR THOSE WHO DEMAND THE UTMOS T OF TH E I R MACHINE SIN EVERY WAY.
