His smile stretched from ear to car after he completely ran away with the 250 class aboard his Bultaco. Gary Jones was fast but could no t match Zahrt's blazing speed, and settled .- for second overall on the Can -Am. Ron Pomeroy (Bull was third . The 500 class was dominated jus t as completely by Mike Hartwig aboard a prototype Yamaha motocross . Jimmy Weinert, second overall on the lon e Kawasaki an d Tony DiStefano, third on his own CZ , didn't stand a chance agai ns t Mike who was p utting on a show fo r his h om et own fans. It rained just enough on race mo rning to w et down th e n at ural terrain track for th e remainder o f the d ay. 250 National A new AMA ruling, petitioned by the riders, allowed the top 10 Nationa l t o r a c e with out running ri de rs qualifying m o t os, It was a safety measure to prevent the top pros fr o m having to subject their bodies to the hands of ove reager Novices as had been the case during the Florida Series. Tony Wynn hit the start gate at full throttle in second gear, knocking it down before it had a chance to fall. The trick worked as Tony flat-tracked the first tum from second position and set the crowd cheering as he took Kenny 0' Zahrt on the last lap to win the first qualifier. ~ The second qualifier went to Frank Stacy on a new Ossa Phantom who took the lead from Ron Pomeroy 's Bultaco on the third lap . Billy Grossi kept his team Honda hanging o n for third. Kenny Zahrt was pulling hole shots all day. They began in the qualifying moto and continued as the first of the 30-minute motos got underway. It wasn't j ust the starts that Kenny was running away with, it was the rest of the m o to as well. By the en d of the second lap he had almost half a minu te lead whi ch in creased to nearly half a lap by mid-m o te . So m ew here behi nd Zahrt, the re was a race.
