He pulled himself and his bruised knee to th e side of the track and someone popped a Coors in his hand. Meanwhile , Rick Burgett (Bul) might as well have been rid in g alone for all the co m pan y he had up front in bo t h races. The O pen Pro was almost a rerun of the 250s. Rick Burgett (B ul) took it all aga in . What a guy! Bill Cook (Mai) chased him all day occasional ly pushing hard b ut it was Burgert's d ay . Cook finished sec ond. Brad Wakefield wound up with the most unusual inj ury of the day . He rode his Honda to a third place 125 Junior trophy but couldn't m ak e it to the presentations. The Washo ugal MX track goes It up the side of a hill and d o wn in to a meadow which runs off to blend into the wooded hills nearby . It's a tough co urse, a lmost entirely na tural terrain, with a little of everyth ing. With a sign -up d elay and the 15 race schedule there was tim e fo r only two mo tos per clas s for th e 400 riders. There were- th ree 125 Junior groups. The winners - Brian Hall, Rick Hollister and Jim Richardso n , were all riding Hondas, All three won both motos. Kevin Jansen carried the Honda trend into the first 125 Intermediate class with two wins. Ron Sun gave him a run in the first race but dropped to a twelfth in the second an d left the chase for second to J eff Mo rrow . Both rod e Hondas. Clay Azar broke the spell by lea ding the secon d In term ed iate group on a Yamaha. Rick Ferris (Yam) took the first race an d ca me in third behind Bill Williams (Yam) in the last race. Mike Kinnear [Hus] went hom e with the big money in the 125 Pro class but n obody j ust handed it to him . Kir k Williams (Ho n) led off in the first m o t a with Kin near ho t o n his ta il. Bu tch Waymi re (Suz) got off t o a bad start an d in working hi s w ay th r ough the pack had to wor k around the b ik e and b od y of David Naylor (Hon) w ho wen t d own in the first lap . Kin near che wed aw ay until he bit off first place and Waymire worked his way to third at the finish . In the second race Waymire and Williams just reversed positions. Waymire led o ff and Williams' Honda i(agged on the lin e and he was dead las t. Kinnear to ok up the ch ase and the lead in th e final half a lap. This time Williams worked up to thi rd. Hubbard wins three at CMC scrambles By Rex Back man & Hayden Campbell CHICO, CAL ., A PR . 7 It was the final race of Cyclc1and's rain-delayed, eight-race scrambles series. Over 130 came ou t to give the course one last ride . With few Ex perts on hand, the size of the classes was limited but th e act io n was great. The combi ned 125 Ex pert an d J unior class was won by 19 70 and 1971 20 0cc National sportsman short track ch am p ion Jim Hubbard on a YZ. Hubbard got another first place troph y for his win in the O pe n Expert /Junior class. Greg Ferguson usually dominates this class on his Bultaco but today Hubbard proved to be to o m uch for the West Sa cramento rid er . T he O pen Novice class was won by Rodger Lollar on his Maico, all t he way from San Jose. In the always-tough 250 class, Tom Dorsey , astride a new Cooper, jumped to the lead closely fo llowed by another Cooper rider Paul Meyer and the Ho nda of Marty J ackson . Dorsey pulled off the track after one lap with a ben t shift lever that was giving him trou ble . Meyer then too k over th e lead an d wen t o n for the win. T he 125 Novicc class was won by Mike Granger o n a Suz uki . Gran ger has taken a few thirds and seco nds the past few weeks, finally got the win after dealing with Honda rider Larry Newman who finished second . Tony King then grabbed th e 100 Novice class lead amid the fir st turn c on fu sion only to give it up when he cras hed. Bob Ccrvan tes t ook ove r th e lead and wen t on for the win. King re mo un te d and salvaged third plac.e.
