Expecially if you dig bikes. was the mai n je t of the day. Quick Quintin stoked the race people and aro und a thousand n ew MX spectators from the student body as he smoked two classes fo r a super trophy. Bei ng suppo rted by Kinn ey 's M uffler, Quintin gassed his rapid megapho ned Honda XR-75 in the second class of th e day wh ich was the 100 clas s. His engine's t humping so un d was heard in fr ont of a h erd of Yamahas for th e win over Tom Lu stbaum an d Bru ce McCalL Quin t in als o pl ay ed the hero's rol e w he n he rambled in t he 125s - all he had to d o was wic k his Honda Elsinore. He streake d ah ead of the more sluggish co mp et it ion for th e win over T om Lustbaum agai n and Bill Clem son. Quintin w asn't th e on ly superst ar I witne ssed winning tw o classes because thumbs up race r T om adem o n a Bultaco from HO n the Line " Racing Sp ecialties did the same. The 250 clas s was easy prey for h im as he whipped Chuck Dupont an d Crai g Starr and also swep t the Open class over Kirk Margh eim and Mike Ford. T hursday at lun ch time th ey slapped the trophies and other prizes in to the hands of the w inn ers. One m ajor gripe I had w as th at it w as hard to get o ut on th e trac k to take some blow-mind photos. Even though I had a press p ass it was almost necessary to punch it out with so m e dudes with walkie talkies. Anyway the flagmen were co o l. The show was brought to you by th e Cypress Cit y p eople Ted T aylor, Chuck Bryant and Chuck Moran with the track being whipped up by Tom adem and Chuck Dupont. The Principal Robert D. T his ti m e it wa s Gr an ad a Hills and Ken n ed y High Sch ool s in an after schoo l race at Indian Dunes. Threatening rains ea rlie r in the day made things look gri m, but the sky cleared up b y m i d va f ter n a a n y i e I din g Indian Dunes a n ice tr ack co ndition . T he race s were sche d u led to start at 3 :00 an d d id . 85 rid ers show ed up to race th eir hearts o ut with two 2 0 m inute m otos. Th e race was planned ab o ut a m on th in advance and seve ral meetings were he l d t o give out numbers and info rmation . The main organize r from Gr an ad a Hills High was Bill Boyce, who reall y worked to get things in order. T he Kenned y High or ganizer s were Rick and J oe Kehoe an d their whole family . T he wh ol e even t went very smooth ly , with n o delays or mix ups except for one th ing . A lo t of rid er s co mp laine d about be ing sco red wrong, but nobody did an ything abou t it. On e rider _ was o ut o f his mota wi th m ech anical prob lems an d got hi s bike fix ed and j o ined in abou t second pl ace 'til th e fini sh and was scored as seco nd for the moto . It seems th e w ay they scored was by copying d own th e numbers of riders by th eir last lap fin ish. The overal l res ul ts are very unofficial ! T he 125 Novice race was very exciting with lo ts of battles goi ng on. To m Bice (Suz) from Kennedy t ook an ear ly lea d with Bo b Drake (Han) a close second and th ird pla ce held by Po wder Puffer J an Klin e (Han) . Th en Drake made his move on Bice and t oo k the lead for th e remainder of th e m o ta. Bice too k sec ond with Kline th ird. In the second mota , Dave Wheeler (H a n) from Granada t oo k the lead with Drake in second and Kline again in third. Bice was ca ugh t in traffic, but was m o ving fast . Meanwhile in the fran t of the p ack , Drake and Kline za pp ed Wheeler , putting Wheeler in third until Bamey Drake (Han ) also pas sed him . Bice made his move on Drake and Wheeler himself in third. T h en Drake crashed and Bice took th e lead, passing both Drake and Kline. Drake got up and regained his lead to the finish, with Bice second and th e Powder Puffer (who zapped all the rest of the boys), Jan Kline , in third. T h e 250 Expert winner was Tom Bat es (CZ) and sec ond went to Mike Morrison (Han ) who usually races Juni or s. Both rid ers are from Granada . T he Keh oe brothers, Rick and Joe, bo th on Mon ark s, sho we d th e crowd a real race in b oth motas of th e 125 Ex per ts, wit h J oe first and Rick second . They are both from Kenned y . T he seco nd Overall went t o Steve Dal ey (Mai) who ha d the disadvant age o f his bike n ot starting in the second m o ta . He d id get it goi ng and p assed everybody except first pl ace. He is from Gran ad a. The Ope n class wa s rul ed by a bi g th um p er, with Mike Sullivan (Tri) runni ng away from everyone. He ' s from Granada. Corona High School MX By Dale Brown CORONA;-CAL. , APR. 26 What is th e difference between a High Sch o ol motocross and o ne o f t he regul arly schedul ed events? Not much. The racers go just as fast, mostl y becau se th ey are th e mainstays o f the sport in So uthern California. Not th e track s, a t least n o t any more . H igh - Sch ool motocross started in co nverte d fo o tb all fie lds , b ut n ow they are run a t profession al facilities. su ch as school adminis trators, fell ow st uden ts , cheerl eaders, et c. And it's nice to see people o ut t here riding in th eir fir st m otocross, p ossibl y o n a b ike tha t they rod e to sch o ol th at morning. T his particular rac e, inv olving six Riverside sch ools, was t he brainc hil d of Dale Teubner, R.A.C .E . h ead honcho . Afte r readi ng abou t similar eve n ts in the Los A ngeles area, he con tacted several racer/s tuden ts an d asked th em if th ey wo uld be in terested . They said yes, so he ask ed th em to get in to uc h with the a d m in istrations o f their respective schools. When Teubn er d idn't he ar from them, he contacted th e principals h ims elf. With th eir support, he org an ized a series of races to be held on Friday ni ghts at Corona Ra cew ay. The winners of each race w ould compete against other schools in following events. So, F riday night's race wa s the firs t in th is series. North High emerged - tri umphant, beating runner up Ramona by four paints . Possibly th e only mis take Teubner m ad e was to sch ed ule Steve Bauer of Ramona and Rick Stout o f Arlington in different di visions of th e 12 5 Super race . Both were moun ted on Hondas, both won th eir races by larg e margins. What a r ace it wo uld have been if they had com pe ted t ogether! In cid entally, Bau er came back on th e same b ike to race in the 250 Exp ert even t. He led for aw h ile, but ge t-offs fo rced him back to third Overall. A t th e en d of eight eve nt s, Ramona _ was leading 39- 3 2. On e race left, the Op en bikes. Kevin and Kell y Call aw ay , both o n YZ Yam ahas, b oth from North, took up th e firs t two positions and held the m . T hat gave Nor t h nine points. Nobody from Ramon a entered , so North was in t he wi nner's circl e. The team was clad in matching jerseys, p rovide d by Yamaha In ternational, a nice to uch . R. A.C. E. r e c e iv ed contingency awards fr om local cycle shop s and gave th em to th e class winner s. They also gave a huge troph y t o No rth High, and indivi d ua l trophies to th e individual team members. The races were well run, in fac t the wh ole series looks promising . Next one is May 24, with North me eting Corona and o thers. Reporter's Notebook : Here's an idea for y o u high school 'c rossers . Put o n your nicest mann er and mo sey on down t o the gym and h it th e football coac h up for the loan of some of yo u r sch ool's football jerseys. They 're st ro ng and tear -re siste n t. You put a m atch ing number on y o ur bike and go racing. Lo ok like a team and m ak e yourselves easier t o sp ot from th e stands...Na matt er how exciting the racing is, th ere is o ne thing I'll always remember about high sch o ol motocross : d ynamit e pit t ootsies.
