Seve ral b ikes finished with broken side covers. Interesting point: Leaki ng o il at this rate, the case would be empty in a matter of minutes. Did the ride r fill it every ten minutes? Or did he maybe have a spare and just put this one on to f inish? No rthern Californian, retired with a broken foot. And so the day went. At the- last special test, co nsisting of six m iles of rocky sandwash with so me ridiculously h igh whoop-de-docs, the final contest took place. Co rd is Brooks arrived with Mike Hannon . Cord is said something like, "Boy, I really went fast in that last special test!" and he had. Then, to Mike Hannon, " Hey , you know we 've raced on this sandwash , remember?" There were some alternate paths in a few places and they discussed those. Cordis was in good spirits and seemed to be in good sh ape. Carl Cranke who arrived a few minutes later, was saying nothing. It was obvious to the spe ctators th at he was "psyching" himself for the special test. At the end, Cordis had ·go ne a bit faster but not fast enough to make up for the difference in yesterday's tests and the 20-second start penalty. He lost overall h on o rs by 9 seconds. T he Manufacturer's team award was not resolved un til the very end. The Bultaco "A" Team it seemed could hardly lose. Two members, Brooks and Hannon, running first and second in their class, were already in and on go ld when third team member, Dave Ekins, arrived. Dave's bike was a wreck. The engine moun ts were broken and the engine was just sitting there. threatening to drop out in the dirt any moment. But . most important, the exhaust pipe was totally missing. Shamrock Referee Tom Center had been "burned" b y the Bultaco Team in last year's Trail with this same sort of problem , a missing muffler on Tom Patton's bike. He was not about to let the same thing happen this year. No pipe, no .finish, Dave was told. So Dave took off across the parking lot and behind the building (grounds for disqualification right there) and reappeared a i cw minutes later with a new exhaust pipe. That didn 't work either. He wa s not allowed to impound his bike and could not finish without the parts he started with. So Ekins lost 100 points on the second day for the Bultaco Team. The Penton Southwest Team; Erick Jensen, Bill Friant, and Steve Hur d lost only six points attrib utab le to Bill Frian t. Hurd and Jensen both earned gol d, so they took th e Manu fact urer 's Te am tr op hy . This Trial was superbly organized an d run. Everything went off like clockwork from a speech by the Mayor of Barstow welcoming the riders to results, produced q uickly at the end of t he two days. I But there is no disputing the fact that most riders did not like the Trial at \ all. One rider said, "I think the Sha mrocks hate us. he was serious. Another group "hung" the Shamrocks in effigy from the wall of Holiday Inn. Some riders changed the Shamrock name to "Shame-rocks." . The prevailing notion seemed to be that if weather made' a run unbearably tough (as happened at the Mississippi Qualifier) that was all right; it was in the natural order of things. But if the club did it , then it was just sadism. Vern Street, a Silver Medal winner, summed up the attitude of many, saying "If the Six Days was like this, I wouldn't want to ride it." The logical answer to that, of course, is "Who says it won't be like this, this year?" • U .- Results M ike Ha nnon . Through the pits it was A .C . Bakken riding for number one, with the lead over Smoke Bomb Gcatz, Bob Balentine, 175 rider And y Kirker, K. McKean, Amateur Ron Pinion, Jimmy Brown , Dave Aldana, Doug Win chel, and Kevi n Hasten. None of the riders following A.C. would h old these same positions to the finish, as either bike problems or hitting rocks on the second lo op , changed several positions Overall. A .C . held onto the lead an d added to his eve r growi ng list of Overall wins, (and even bigger list of 400 Expert win.) Just t urned Expert this year, (and he al ready wo n o ne Overall as an A ma teur), Bob B a l e n ti n e too k advantage of Smokebomb's DN F t o m o ve into the second Overall by the finish. Doug Winchel has no t been seen as much as last year, but put it together this weekend to take third Overall, first ,25 0 Expert, Jimmy Brown had the lead ' h alf way through the second loop until his front wheel hit a rock. While he was recovering, he waved Winchel away from the rock, then re mounted and still was able to pick u p fourth Overall, second 250 Expert. Mike Candillo wasn't even in the top ten when he came through the pits, but he made up the time on the second loop, reaching the finish in fifth Overall, third Open. Following the third Open bike was the first 175 to get the chec kered , Andy Kirker, who let some riders by on the second loop, (since it con tained several miles of fire roads and dry lakes) . N. Nichols picked up another first Open Amateur with a great seventh Overall finish . Ron Pinion had been leading the Amateurs running sixth Overall thro ugh th e pits, but spe nt several m in u t es wi ring o n his pi pe and then stopped o n the second lo op t o pick up club m em be r Jim Eveland (who ha d hit a ro ck ). He still was 'second Open Amate ur, whil e Eveland re mo unted his desert sled to get fou rth 25 0 Ex pert. Tra il bike numb er one Larry Roesel er in all w hite leath ers, kept his little Harley wi de open with Br uce Ogilive (H ·D) ho t on his fender. Through the pits, an d at the finish, on ly two bikes separated ,t hem . Roeseler finished twelfth Overall, and Ogilive finished fifteenth. For two trail bikes to fin ish in t he top fifteen Overall on su ch a fast c o urse is qui te a feat. R ob bi e Parm a of th e Sand Sailors, see ms to be getting along real well with his new 175 Yam, as this was his second Amate ur Div, II win in a row . Mike Eckhart gave the 175 class another try this weekend and p icked up second. Amateur Mark Cartwright looks to have gotten his last transfer towards Expert in the Trail Bike di visio n , as he picked up another first. L ucky Merrit returned to racing after recovering from i n j u r i e s to take second behind Cartwrigh t. In the Novices on the first loop co min g in for gas, it was Danny Phillips with th e lead, with Bob Wadlow in hot pursuit running second. During the whol e race, both were so close that if o ne had crashed he would h ave taken the other one wi th him. Dan had the lead until they got into the tight sandy t urns on th e sec o nd loop, where Wadl ow's CZ out co rn ered Phillip's stock '72 - Yamaha. They finished Wadl ow first, Phillip s sec o nd. This also wen t for the 25 a Novi ce class, as they were both seated on tw o and a halfs. They had a big lead over th e next Novice . The next Novice was also the first 400, K. Pillars, glad to hear those were 250s ahead of him . Tim Henry was first 175. In t he Trail class, it was Mark Powers taking the win over Cody Watts and Do n Tortorelli. Kathy Angli n (DKW) was the first Powder Pu ffer Amateur to bounce gracefully to t he checke red abead of Linda Gri ffing on her 175 Yamah a from the Deser t Barons. Usual Powder Puff win ne r Lynette Zuber \ (Hus) an d las t wee k's winner Marcia Holley (H us) both DNF'ed . Daw n Grant (DKW) was first PP Novice. A ldana d id n ' t finish agai n, run ning eigh th ' Overall. I saw him using his 500 BSA for a pillow out on the second loop. Maybe he -wouldn't agree, but I know there are several others that would, that it was a perfect weekend for racing and a fun c o urse to race on . Fast, challenging, bu t dusty in parts. There was one f un , downhill, no pushing-em-uphills, two dry lakes, several miles of fire roads, wide open desert riding, and b est of all, naked girls! • Results in the Results Se ction.
