Rick Sh eren (Ha n) got the hole shot in both 125 Pro rnotos, (m uc h to the am azement of Mark Tyer, who later said "I don't see ho w he does it. " ), but missed a shift at the first turn and crashed in the first moto, and just plain crashed after a partial lap in the second . Tyer (Ha n) took the first moto lead after Sheren fell and held off Honda factory rider Marty Smith for four laps. Smith crashed later while in the lead but still won the mota. The big show was in the second mota. Tyer, o n a DG Perform an ce Special ties tuned Elsinore , led un til th e last lap. On the straights Tyer 's bik e loo ked j ust as fast as Smith's works ma chine. While pres sur ing Tyer ab o u t mid-way, Smith crash ed on th e by then hard p acked and slick :rack , go t up in a flash , and j ust reeled in Tyer, passing on th e tw elfth and fin al lap as T yer tir ed . As he cro ssed th e line, Smith received a stan d ing ova tio n fr om th e small crowd. T yer go t no ap p lause , but his bike had made its point just th e same. Albert May (Mai) bl asted into the first position in the 500 Pro first moto from th e gate. He stretched out a big lead, crashed spectacularly, dropped 17 seconds and two positions into third , and made up all but three seconds and one position in the remaining eight laps . He finished second behind Tommy Croft, riding a Kelvin Fran ks-frame d Suzuki 400. In the second 500 Pro rno to , May again started out in front, but this time made no mistake, winning by 40 seconds over Croft . Kevin Callaway (Yam) was running second 250 Intermediate one . lap into the first moto, and finished second right behind Jim Ruth (Mai) . In the second moto, he sta rted fir st but still finished sec o nd behind Ruth a fte r prolonged d ices in both m otos. James Burton (Ha n) ran aw ay with th e fir st 125 J unior Division I moto wire to w ire. It wasn' t quite so easy fo r him in th e second m oto, however. Jeff Wilson (Ho n) , who placed way back in eigh th in th e firs t moto, j ust put himself in first fro m th e start o f th e second moto and sta ye d th er e, in spite of Burton's best e ffo rts t o dislodge him . Overall Burton w on the class, with J im Carlson (Ho n) second by virtue of consistan t tw o-four fin ishes, and Wilson third Over all .
