The other co mpeti tion star ted to drop o ff th e pace despite Bowlin g m issin g gears and being low o n horsepower. He co uld simply out drive th em into th e co m er and co me out in a bett er line. Bowling took the w in over Rose with Nick M cBride third. St eve Parker to ok home the win in the Open Junior main wh en his toughes t co m petito r, Barry Lawerence pitched a muffl e r a fte r ge tting h it by Scotty Booth. Lawerence was doi ng his super sliding operation wh en he caugh t tr action a little too ear ly and cu t in front o f the 500 Triumph and go t wh acked. Going into the fin al race Eddie Clark and .Sco t t Tipton were th e runaw ay leaders. Eddie rid es a 125cc Honda Elsinore and Scott a Hond a Mini . Clark started out in the 12 5 Juniors and now rides in the Int erm ed iate division. Scott possib ly saw hi s titl e cha nces go d own th e drain wh en , after a sec on d pla ce finish in the first 100 Ju nio r moto, he fell hard in th e second and had to se t t le for fifth overall. In Clark 's first race, h e dominated the 12 5 Intermediat es and ca p tu red th e o verall win with three firsts . Th e second class for Tipton was th e 125 Beginners, an d Scott grabbed the first two moto wins, but after crashing co uld not co mpe te in the fin al. Scott took ho me second overall. A.M.C. Night MX By Thew Asp IRVINE , CAL., MAR. 22 Wha t's dark, very cold , and freezes you to d ea th ever y t ime you go t o one? A nighttime moto cros s race. Yes friends , I went t o cov er the all new A.M.C. night races at Orange County Inte rn ati on al Ra ceway. The stacked o w ne r o f A.M .C., beautiful Bette Lasker a nd her skilled crew decided to drop the ir Sun d ay races at Oran ge Coun ty International Ra ceway to dabble in Friday night race s instead. 1 just want to go on record as saying t hat for a club's first attempt at p r omoting a n igh t race Miss Lasker and her staff d id on e hell of a job an d you can be sure tha t she is goi ng to make Friday ni ghts something that people are going to look fo rward to . (B ear in mind that Th ew is related to Ms. Lask er. . .Ed.} The first scheduled race for the eveni ng was the co mb ined Open Experts an d 250 Experts. Leaping into firs t place in all three of the m o to s was the Su zuki of Mik e Steams, who was eventually to become the first place " green grabber" for th e 250 Experts. At first it appeared as though Stearns was going to hav e his hands full trying to hold off th e co nstan t ch arg e of the only rider to pressure him for the lead. This was David Pessy (Ho n) . At the drop of th e gate in the first rno to both Stearns and Pessy sh o t out in front of the rest o f th e pack n ever to be seen agai n until th ey sta rted lapping the field . For the en tire race Pessy, was nev er further away than three feet from Stearns' rear tire un til. o n the seven t h lap, Pessy decid ed to m ak e hi s mo ve. He tried to make a wild pass on the outside of th e track while both he and Stearns were go ing up and over one o f the larger jumps found on th e co urse . He didn 't do it . St earns saw thi s co m ing and was pr epared for it. A s Pessy cam e alongside Stearns a t th e pe ak of the jump the Su zuki ace took h is ha ndlebars and gently tapped th e flyi ng Ho nda's hars, which tu rned Dave into t he J u nio r birdman. Both he and his bike event ually made a : re -ent ry in to our p lanet's mu rky a t mosphere and landed with all t he grace and style of a pel ican doing a no se dive into co nc rete pavement. Neither he nor his Honda we re badly dam aged in the spe ctacu lar crash, howev er, but after t his litt le incid ent he decid ed to cool it as far as the 250 races go for th e rest of the evening. Chet Davis (Yam) came up with the win with a second place to Ken Cc:lorie (Yam) . Gary Pier ce (Ya m) claim ed th ird. Wayne Loesch (Su z] rode very smoothly and didn't let the pressure of Ik e Reed (Kaw) and Dick Wooten (Ya m) ge t to him. Reed came up beh ind Loesch and tried to p ass him o n th e outside several tim es b ut d id not succ eed. Loesch won th e 125 A -M ain and also ca me up wi th the to p spo t in the Tro p hy Dash. In th e 20 0 T roph y Dash A lan Busb y (Bul ) to ok firs t. Busby was really moving fast in th e A Main wh en hc too k a sp ill. Randy Melton (Bul) too k o ver th e lead and won th e race . Gar y Davis (Bu l) ca me in for second with t hird going to St eve Sweet (Bu l). Lest er Hu ey (Suz) knew wh at he was after and swe p t in to the lead fro m th e sta rt of th e race. Charles Stande fo rd (Suz ), Rick Oliv er (Bul) and Mark Williams (Ric ) p ut up a great fight but lI uey was n ' t about to se t t le for an y t hing but first . lie had the race in his hands and he knew it. The Missio n Ho nda Elsinores o f Dave Carlson and Brad Dutoit we re screarnin' at the drop of the gate along with Rick Wiseman, Lennie Garton and YZ mounted Richard Clvmore, Despite the crew of 125 Experts, Kearney Mesa Honda ra cer Jeff Foland of San Diego whipped 'em all and bagged the cash. When I talked to the stunned co mpetition they d idn't fee l that J eff was really fast , just a m an iac ! The first moto [Ired off and the spe ctators witnessed t he Penton aces Tyer and Miller gassin' it one and two. Tyer co n tin ued to haul for the win bu t Miller had his carb come apart at the corkscrew comer where he came to a su dde n stop. Dave Carlson then captured second place while Foland was movin' up and swept his Elsinore th rough t he checkere d flag in third. Lenn ie Garton ro o sted o n th e c rew at the start but th en Foland and Tyer proved too rad ical fo r h im and made a blur as they st rea ked by him for th e win. With a monopol y in the 125 Expe r t m oto wins J eff Foland aced out the rest for a dean m on e y win o ver Mar k T yer and fas t Dave Carl son. Malone smoked the pack with three straight 250 Exp ert wins as he sprayed everyone with dirt clods on his red tanked Maico that had its biggest competition co mi ng fro m Dave Carlson. The Mission Honda racer stoked everyone when he entered a bl ue ta nked Bu l for a chan ge of pace an d out goosed t he pack for seco nd.
