High flying Von Peterson (CZ) shot out in th e lead in th e first m ot o with Brad Lynch (Mai ) and Hal Strau ss (CZ) right o n his t ail w aiting for a mistake . Peterson went wide in a turn letting Strau ss slip by, but Pe terson got b ack around him in the fin al m o m en ts of the mo to to take t he win . In the second mota Peterso n agai n took the lead wit h Ly nch glue d to his rear. Both riders had a fier ce battle for the lead wit h Peterson winning it by a little bit a t th e fin ish . In th e th ird moto, Lynch was probably tired of chasing everybody else, so he pu lled a hole shot and led fro m sta rt to finish . Peterson won Overall by virtue of his two first pl ace finishes. The Open E xp ert race was a two-man show with Mike Puckl es (Mai) and Tom Claire (C Z ) co nstan tly at battle with each othe r. Pu ckles power proved to be faster b y winn ing first Overall for himsel f and Claire to ok second. The b est race o f t he d a y was definitel y th e 125 Expert. Tony Dela Torre (Mnk ] an d his best ri vals, Gary Hubet (Pe n) a nd Tobi Taki (Can -Am ) put o n a fast race, al ways bunch ed up figh ting fo r t he lead. Tobi Taki was lea di ng every m ot o, but crashed a nd a b ro ken throttle ca ble kept him from th e win he w as so d e t ermined to ge t. Dela T o rre was the O veral l winner. 1t was a cle an sweep day for 250 Junio r w inner Don Hans en (Mai) . He disappeared from e very rider ex cep t Mik e Morrison. In th e first mota, Morrison shot o u t in the lead making it look like ano the r Overall win to bring his t otal to five a t Valley Cycle Park. But Hansen 's Maico see m ed to have much more power t ha n Morrison's Honda and Hansen left them al l in th e weeds af ter he passed Morrison. In the second a nd third m ota, Hans en just to ok off from ever yo ne. . In th e 250 Interm edi ate race, Wayne Carlton (Mai) won the drag to the first co rne r. Mike H uddlston (Mai) and Brian Summe rs (CZ) were ver y close in second and thi rd. About halfway through th e m oto, Huddlston made a move on Carlton a nd to ok th e lead only to lo se it a t th e fi nis h lin e. Se cond and th ird m o to s were domin ated by Carlton , so he was t he Overall wi nne r for th e d av.
