Roberts top match race rider By Gary Van Voorhis OULTON PARK, ENG., A PR. 15 The British team once again won the John Player TransAtlantic Trophy by topping the American team 415 to 401. Kenny Roberts (Yam) took to p individual honors by winning three of the six races. ' Action started at Brands Hatch o n Friday wi th th e first leg going to Britain's Paul Smar t (Suz) after A mer ica n tea m m emb e r . DuHamel (Kaw) dropped o ut wh ile in the lead. DuHamel returned to wi n th e secon d leg. Ro berts took sec o nd in both races. Mallory Park was th e scen e of Sat urday's two race s and Kenny Roberts won both . Eas te r Mo nday 's series finale to ok place at Oulton Par k an d Britisher Barry Sheene (S uz) and Ro ber ts wo n t he final two races. Santa Barbara TT By Bob Sloan' SANTA BARBARA, CAL., APRl L 14 Even though it was a d ay for eggs and chocolate bunnies the Star ters M.C. had a goo d turnout of over 120 riders. Women's Lib erati on was on th e move ea rly in the 125 Division 2 as J ay Bales (Yam) to ok the firs t race hands d own. But local Male Ch au vanists weren't unwary as Sk eet er Marks (Suz) put it to the sto ps to take th e Overall win . The 125 Exp ert ba ttle was prob ably the most hard fough t ra ce of the day , especially in the th ird ra ce as Fr eddy Joenck (BuI) got an early lead follow ed closely by Mark Garn be tta (Bul). A fter one lap Joenck clipped Gambetta 's front wheel and sent him over the ' handlebars. Mark got up , en te red the trac k one lap behind and rode h is cah ones off trying to seek reven ge. J oe nck wen t o n for an Overall win . Terry Ash (Ho n) fo un d the groove in the 250 Diviso n I race and he ld an impressive lea d for the first few lap s but Tony Segale came closer and closer until he got by. Segale h eld the lead whil e h a r d c h argin g Do n Bolduc (CZ) th re atene d . These th ree di ced it ou t all day but Segalie reigned. Competition in the 250 Expert clas s was fast and impressive. Danny Waller (Bu l) spent most of his time in the first race dicing with Ro y Shrad er (KT M) while in the second it was Fr edd y J oenck (Bul) over Wall er . Waller , not to go unno ticed cam e back in th e third race to take the Overall win . In b ig bore competition it looked like Paul (Streaker) Napoleone (Bul) was going to wa lk (Streak?) away with it b u t mechanical difficul ties forced him ba ck as Tom Shumard fought it o ut with Mike Forsy th (Tri) for ho no rs. The Starters M.C. en ded the day in a fun and in teresting way with first a team mi nicycle race then a doubles ra ce . It was a nice day, no dust , warm sunshine an d everyb ody was d iggin ' the races. • some of the guys had to motor around with red and white flags b ound around th eir rear hubs. Cavn ess whip ped the Junior class ove r his main co m petitor Glenn Keyes (Mai) and Mike Halberstadt on a Husqv ama. _ AMCMX By Tom Corley IRV INE, CAL., APRIL 12 With a clean first moto win , Mike Stearn s (Suz) strutted well ah ead o f Coast Moto cycl ist Clay Musolf (CZ) . Clay pushed his machine to the yellow starting gate with a pump in his hand becaus e his Barum kn ob had the leaks. The thumbs up peopl e or Buls tonigh t were AAA cyclist Lar ry McCarty an d Dave Carlson . Both wh ip p ed aroun d in third and fou rth. T he big buc ks p osi tions wer e in different hands in th e second moto . This ti me the flash of Mission Honda, Dave Car lson, streaked to t he fro nt. Th e sole Kawasak i racer Mike McG o wen was on his kn obs but co uld n' t make a pass whil e Stearns was snu ffed back into t hird . Meanwhile, Ac e McCarty was seen sidelined at the cor kscrew corn er with ha ssles while Muso lf did a big ea t at th e j acknife c orn er. an T hi s was c o m p le t el y unp red ictab le b at tle of 250 Expert fast guys. The third mo to was swept by Musolf on t he red framed , alloy piped CZ. Stearns gassed it through with th e second wave of th e checkered wh ile Dave Carls on, who is slappin ' the bucks into his Bul for lack of a sppnsor , took third. McCarty an d McGowen slid ou t wh ich blew their third mo to scores . The Easter Bunny remembe red all o f those kids wh o had toleave thei r homes early that m orning by holding an egg hunt o n th e park gro unds. It was a fine gesture. Competition w as" sti ff in all clas ses , even in th e Min is where Vin ce Van Hook (Ho n) outlast ed e igh t o ther 8 0cc Ad van ced riders with two firsts and a fifth. Kent Bernstein had two sec o nds and a third to take seco nd place while jerry Little fin ished third Overall. In the Ex pe rt class, " Wild" Bill Barl ow on an Elsinore rode h alf of his first m oto with only one shoc k, ye t he wo n firs t Overall in t he 25 0s with a gran d slam. Jeff Black (Hon), led all three motos fro m start to finis h to take home th e firs t pl ace 125 Expert trop hy. The 250 Novi ces we re dominated by Steve Pinnerl (Yam) ,' wh o took care of his d ivision with th ree first p lace finis hes , Rand y Porter (CZ) looked good as he rode to a second Over all wh ile his brother, Mike (Puc ) placed third. Mike Sh eppard proved th at the new Pen to ns can really move by leading the 250 Beginners in to th e sunset.
