(Bul) return ed to motocross action after about a year's trial at nat tracking and took fourth. Last week's wi nner, Bill Shepard (CZ ) took a fourth in the final moto but a fi rst round cr ash left him 19th in th e ra ce and 10th overal l. Taking over the fifth spot charge was Steve Russell (CZ ). Marty Smith (Hon) mad e it back-to-hack stri n g of five victories in a row in the 125 cc Pro Class , agai n by a sweep. Sin ce January , in II race meetings, he has lost but on ce ove rall. He broke in a new ma ch ine today in preparation for his defense of th e Hangtown Classic 125 cc cla ss win he earned last year, and wore out a pair of old riding boots in the process. The sole of the right foot dragged almost the entire time of the second moto and at one poin tit a lmost got caugh t on a rock, but Marty saved it an d finished way ahead of Chuck Bower (Ho n ). In th e first mo t o it wasn 't as easy to get r id of Bower as they diced for about seven laps before Sm ith began to ease ahead . NRAMX By Dale Brown MOORPARK , CAL. , MAR. 24 The National Racing Association (NRA) decided to put all the bigger -bore Experts an d Intermediates together for two half-hours of fun and fro lic. Tom Claire (CZ) grabbed the lead in the first moto, but co uldn't hold off Jim O 'Neal (Mai), who was dest ined to blow the rest of th e p ack into the weeds. Meanwhile J eff Blix an d Vo n Peterso n were on the move. Blix got his YZ pas t Peterso n an d his CZ, an d t hen both go t past Mark Hateley (Kaw) to occ upy third and fo urth. Blix set sail after Claire, only to spin an unwan ted doughnut and be set ba ck to fifth, be hi nd Tony Lanzarone (Mai ). Peterson was successful in getting by his Mid-Valley teammate to hold second overall and first 250. Blix was fast gaining on Lanzarone, and passed him on tne white .flag lap. Since everything was being score d separately, O'Neal got the first Open position, followed by Claire and Lanzarone. Peterson was first 250, with Blix and Hatdey runners-up, O'Neal took the overall win in the Open class, wi th Lanzarone second, and Claire third. Blix got the 250 win, with Peterson second and Hateley third. If you don 't believe that lightning can strike twice, ask Larry Watkins. Watkins had taken his Honda to a huge lead in the first 125 Expert ra ce. Bu t 20 minutes in to t he act ion , Watkins began to tire . Jim Hale (Pe n) was busy chi pping into Watkin's lead . Two com ers before the fi nish, Hale pa ssed Watkins fo r the win. Watkins again garnered a h uge lead in the second m o to . Again Him Ha le was ch ip p ing away at it . Whe n the white flag came ou t, Ha le was righ t behind Watkins. Larry p ulled Ha le down t he front straight and up the hill for a little breathing space . But co m ing around the comer where he had been passed before, Watkins fe ll in th e exact place where the pass had occured. Ha le wen t around the fallen Honda to take first.
