But, more and more people read about high scho ol motocross and more get up enough guts to finally .present an ide a to the he ad " c hee ses" o f the school. Some people don 't even go to the schools, but take a sin cere interest helping out the st ud en ts. Two such people are Rex Reese and Eric Alexan d er. They did the two months of plann ing and persuading it t ook to pull off th is race . T he race, an in tersch olas t ic program wi th four schools, (Montclair, Chaffey , Alta Lorna and Upl and) put on a good show for th e firs t time motocross spectators and th e regulars alike. Local sho ps d id a b ig p art in contributi ons. Re x and Er ic managed t o round up a firs t aid crew to patrol the course. T he co urse was quite different from an y o th er high school co u rse . But Rex a nd Eric ' w an t ed to do thin gs differen t. Claude Osteen' s Cycle Par k was th e site of t he race. I guess they tho ug h t it was t ime fo r a cha nge o f sce ne ry. Af te r all, green ro lling h ills are much m ore pl easant fo r a ba ckground than class rooms a nd bleache rs . T he 1.3 m ile cou rse had an exce llen t layout , bu t th er e co u ld have b ee n better track p re para ti on . Flags were also strung aro un d so tha t ride rs wouldn't 'go off t he co u rse. Before ra ce impress ions weren 't too good. Pit racing was so bad th at wh en I fina lly found a pl ace to park, riders zo omed b y on bo th sides of the car and I thoug h t I had parked on th e sta r ting line by mistake. No sec u rity men co uld be seen an yw here to sto p t h is foo lish pi t racing. Lu ck ily, nobody was h ur t w hil e t his went o n. Sign up seeme d a li tt le con fusing. Som e riders co mplai ne d about the slippery grass co rn ers in t he mo rning, but th e beefs were suppressed to a m inimum . I w itnessed a few in cidents b y 1 studen ts th at were jus t plain dumb. One sm art flagman th ough t he would add so me co m ed y to hi s co m er by hi tting rid ers on the head wi th the flag as they wen t by. I also saw three rid ers riding th e wron g way on the co u rse du ring p rac tice ! One of the only alert flagmen tri ed to flag t hem th e o ther way, but th ey were too busy t rying t o im p res s th eir clas smates to worry about a fl agm an . They fi n a lly did ge t - st rai ghtene d o ut by o t he r riders who t old them that the course only goes in one d irection. T hese a re th e kind s o f people th at hi nder th e success of the events lik e these. T heta Cable Channel 3 heard ab out the event and thought it was worth covering. They covered eve ry race with their b ig cran e lV camera. If you went to the sid e of the mobile truck, you could ha ve watched your buddies in action on the little lV set, But, some spectators go t carried aw ay with the id ea of a cam era poin ted at them and m ade the home viewers think it was akindergarten motocross instead of a high school ra ce . Ex cept for these inc idents, the progr am was pretty fine . Rex was interviewed and explained the cou rse . When asked wh at he thought of the results so far, "he ju st said "Great. n It wa s. Two very fast h igh school ' cr ossers, Brad Lynch (Mai ) from Montclair and Tim Hoover (Suz ) from Upland put on one of the best sho ws for the action hun gry c rowd . Those two were con sist antly in battle in both motos o f the 250 Expert cl ass. Lynch to o k th e overall wit h Hoover a close second. First 25 0 Novice and th ird Over all wa s Wad e Reese. The 125 Ex pe rt race was also ex citing, wi th T im Hoover (Suz) domin at in g th is one . A hard earn ed second went t o Dave Sc o ny ers (Hon) fro m Montcl air. Taylor Sisco (Ho n) dominated Div. II 125 Novice while Ken Morris (H on) w on Div. 1. K en Black (Hod), 100 Novic e wi n ner, real ly flew t o his vict o rie s. He's from Up lan d. From th e spec ta t or s' view . it was thrilling to watch. The bi ggest spectator attrac ti on wa s d efin itely " De Coster Hill." T he whole course wa s drawn o u t an d every corn e r or jump ha d a name an d "DeC o ster Hill " was th e most p o p u la r w ith the spectato rs and , photograph ers. Riders topped out up alo ng th e ro ug h hill on ly to reach t he top and be greete d w ith a left tum j ump. Ne wco mers were fascina ted at th e way th os e dudes cou ld turn the wheel " sid eways in m id -a ir , One lad y found it L ver y funn y. The overall handling of the 10 6 riders t urne d ou t good. T he crowd loved it. The spectato rs lov ed it. T he prize presen tation light en ed sp irits , as gree dy litt le racer s to o k home thei r winn ings. Everybody waited t o fin d o u t wh ich school wo n Overall . When the y a nn o u nced Up la nd as th e wi n ner. th e on ly thi ng I heard wa s a kid say, uH ow co m e they won?" He was fro m Alta Lorn a a nd they ca me in second. •
