Reschedu led f rom March 31 In a publication aimed at the Junior High and elementary level reader, an author's job is at best ambiguous. Robin Lawrie has managed to produce a book that will satisfy in several ways the education, motorcycle-wise, of this age group. Small in pages, brigh t in page design color , a deq uately sprinkled with technical and scientific vocabulary, and easily read, t he b ook d ocs m o re than provide the read er wi th p age t urning practice. Lawrie b lends simple sentences in to learning steps through his elementary cum technical progressions into the whats and h o ws of motorcycles. The author estab lishes the motorcycle as an entity first through a brief historical sojourn, then as a visible me chanical creation. The technological workings of the motorcycle are well handled by usage of easily understood diagrams and ac companying copy that runs the gamut from simple to precise vocabulary. In the righ t hands, and with a li ttle bit of in st ruction the book could be u sed to s a t i s f y a number of ed uca t ion ally desirable goals. It clearly serves as good reading practice, serves up a sizeable science lesson, a good dose of dictionary usage, and lots of question raising. For the beginning rider or the youngster who shows an in terest in b ike s the book can be nothing other than an asse t , It must b e noted however that although geared fo r the pre-and-junior High st uden t, the book does not take into account th e fact that so many youngsters in this age bracket are mos t proficient in th e subj ec t of motorcycles, wh at m akes th em go, an d how to ride th em. The book for them, I feci, co uld on ly serve as light reading ma te rial at b est .
