about a year's trial at nat tracking and

Taking over the fifth spot charge was
Steve Russell (CZ ).
Marty Smith (Hon) mad e it
back-to-hack stri n g of five victories in a

He broke in a new ma ch ine today in
preparation for his defense of th e
Hangtown Classic 125 cc cla ss win he
earned last year, and wore out a pair of
old riding boots in the process. The sole
of the right foot dragged almost the
entire time of the second moto and at
one poin tit a lmost got caugh t on a
rock, but Marty saved it an d finished
way ahead of Chuck Bower (Ho n ). In
th e first mo t o it wasn 't as easy to get r id

laps before Sm ith began to ease ahead .
Dave Miller (Pen ) co nsistentl y rode for
third over Jeff Jennings (H o n ) and Mark
Tyer (Pe n) .

The National Racing Association
(NRA) decided to put all the
bigger -bore Experts an d
Intermediates together for two
half-hours of fun and fro lic.
Tom Claire (CZ) grabbed the
lead in the first moto, but
co uldn't hold off Jim O 'Neal
(Mai), who was dest ined to blow the
rest of th e p ack into the weeds.
Meanwhile J eff Blix an d Vo n Peterso n
were on the move. Blix got his YZ pas t
Peterso n an d his CZ, an d t hen both go t
past Mark Hateley (Kaw) to occ upy
third and fo urth. Blix set sail after
Claire, only to spin an unwan ted
doughnut and be set ba ck to fifth,
be hi nd Tony Lanzarone (Mai ).
Peterson was successful in getting by
his Mid-Valley teammate to hold second
overall and first 250. Blix was fast
gaining on Lanzarone, and passed him
on tne white .flag lap. Since everything
was being score d separately, O'Neal got
the first Open position, followed by
Claire and Lanzarone. Peterson was first
250, with Blix and Hatdey runners-up,
O'Neal took the overall win in the
Open class, wi th Lanzarone second, and
Claire third. Blix got the 250 win, with
Peterson second and Hateley third.
If you don 't believe that lightning
can strike twice, ask Larry Watkins.
Watkins had taken his Honda to a huge
lead in the first 125 Expert ra ce. Bu t 20
minutes in to t he act ion , Watkins began
to tire . Jim Hale (Pe n) was busy
chi pping into Watkin's lead . Two
com ers before the fi nish, Hale pa ssed
Watkins fo r the win.
Watkins again garnered a h uge lead in
the second m o to . Again Him Ha le was
ch ip p ing away at it . Whe n the white flag
came ou t, Ha le was righ t behind
Watkins. Larry p ulled Ha le down t he
front straight and up the hill for a little
breathing space . But co m ing around the
comer where he had been passed before,
Watkins fe ll in th e exact place where the
pass had occured. Ha le wen t around the
fallen Honda to take first. Watkins
picked up the bike and carrie d on for
second.

Torre (Mnk) swapped third and fourth
in the two mo t os. De LaTorre co p ped
