Bo x 806 San Pablo , CA 9480 6 Telephone : (41 5) 758-0615 M ..R.E. the CAPITOL - 0.. < By Russ Sanford Hoax Chuck Clayton, owner of Cycle N ews and on e of M.O.R.E .'s strongest and staunchest supporters, came to the conclusion that M.p.R.E. was being ta ken for granted, and decided to give the Ca lifo rn ia motorcycl ists something to th ink abou t. Without Sanford's knowledge Chuck wrote and pub lished Ru ss' obituary in the Mar ch 12 issue of Cycle N ews West. Chuck didn't intend for people to really believe that Russ had 'go ne to his glory ,' bu t that is what most people presumed. When Ru ss wa s made aware of th e article, while on a business trip to Southern California , he im medi a tely returned t o Sac ramen to and began tel ephoning friends and rel ati ves to let t hem know t ha t he w as still very much alive. As a result of the article , Russ ' wife Do ris has been besieged with messages o f co nd o lenc e. Also, a great many pe ople have co n tri bu te d funds in var ying amoun ts to th e 'MeMOREial Fund ' as it was referred to in the Cy cle News article. These co nt ributio ns ar e bein g re turned to the p ersons wh o sent -them just as fast as they are received. Both Ru ss and Doris fee l badly th a t so many persons we re grief-st ric ke n by the article, but the re has been some offsettin g degree of co m fo rt from the fact that so many p eople really car ed about the job that M_O.R.E. has been doing. Russ has emphatically stated that he would not have co nd o ned the printing of th e article, although he can no t help but be ap precia ti ve of Chuck Clayton's desire to further he lp the cause of M.O .R .E . Cycle N ew s has sin ce donated $500 to M.O .R.E. More dates to remember _B Even though Sanford and M.O .R.E. are still alive and doing their th ing for motor cyclists, the co m men ts that Clayton mad e abo ut the financial co nd ition of Ru ss and M.O.R.E. were totally true.
