MAR . 31 Some misinformed persons believe that Slick Dick picked up his quick, slick ' po litical tricks when his brother Donald 's ha mburger joint was streaked by a dude on a motorcycle back in the fift ies, as witnessed by conspirator Chuck Clayton. In fact, Slick Dick learned I all his slick political tricks by read ing the Cycle News Political Sa~ spec ial issue in November of 1972. But don 't blame it all on us. As Reese Ultz says, different people react to d ifferent st imulus in different ways. Don 't miss out on your chance to become a Great Amer ican and defend the " inst it ut ion of the Presidency." By race time all was calm and clear as the strong wind died. The race was delayed a short time until the ambulance arrived, and it was a good thing. Riders on the line don't think abou t the rough and demanding co u rse that they have to con q uer . most just wanted transfer rides and points. Through the pits on the first loop, it was regular "top four finisher Jim Wotring with the lead. Second rider was from the Rimrunners MC, aboard a 400 CZ; number 145 and his name is Kevin Hasten. Following Kevin was lightweight Amateur, Dan Dawson, followed by Wa~e Cooke, B. Bennett, Frankie Keepers, Jr., Cordis Brooks, Dave Laprik, Ron Wright, and Jimmy Brown. But nobody stayed in the positions they held throug h the pits. The most noticeable postion change was the one for first overall. Kevin Hasten got by Wotring, and held on to the lead until he reached the finish. Kevin, a 250 Expert, has had a lo t of prob lems with his 250 C Z, so his sponsor, Cosat Motor Cycles, gave him a factory 400 CZ for t his wee kend. I talked to Kevi n before the race about the bike because he is co nstantly complaining about lack of power, and he said the bike is so fast he doesn't even know how many gears It has because he's never had it out of third. He must have found out during the race it was a five speed. Jim Wotring who, without a doubt, should be 250 class point leader by now had to settle for second overall, first ligh tweight. Third overall was taken by a Division ] Amateur, Dan Dawson, whose bike looked far from trick. The 100's M.C. seem to have picked up two of the top four overall finishing positions as B. Bennett held on for fourth overall, second Open Expert, two places behind club member Wotring. Bennett holds number 37 . So did the rider who followed him to the checkered, only his had an "X" behind it. Wayne Cook rounded out the top five , th ird in his class. Fourth 250 Expert was Ron Wright , who just about summer time of last year was winning every European Scrambles held , as a Novice. In fact, European Scrambles was all he planned to ride. He obviously changed his mind. Following Ron was a rider who loo ks to have finally gotten his stuff toget he r after un loading hard las t year; Frankie Keepers, Jr., aboard a West Cycle-tuned Husky. Finishing out the top ten finishers were third, fo urth, an d fifth O pe n Experts. Ar t Knapp, eighth overal l; Mik e Mars h, n in th ; and Terry Davis, ten th . Hot o n Davis' rear fender wa s the first O pen A mateur, E. Andrade . So me ten places la ter, Mike Powers aboard an Action Cycle Husky, flew in for second Op en Amateur. D. Bre wer, Jr., G. Rowden, and Ron Pinion (with a rear fI at) were the next three Open Amateurs. With Dawson third overall, the real battlc in the 250 Amateur class was for second, with Stephen Greenberg taking the honors, a very respectable sixteenth overall. Jeff Kaplan is also an Amateur.
