Most of the riders were local go-fasters, like Mike Todd, Rick Salmon, Randy Berkeley, Jeff Blix and Mitch Mayes, pl us a few out-of towners like Ron Huffman and Texan Kent Howerton. They held sigo-up until minutes before the first 250-0pen Expert moto, in hopes of getting as many rider s from Bay m are as possible. There w ere a few late entrie s, and some of them took their pra ctice laps d uring the 125 Beginner/Novice moto. Mike Todd (Mai) took the early lead in the first 30 minute rnoto, followed by Rick Salmon (Mai) and Don Hicks (Mai). Todd, Hicks, Randy Berkeley and Mark Peters were the on ly entries in the Open cla ss, all aboard Maicos. Todd's carb ureto r soon fell apar t, Jeff Blix (YZI, Randy Berkeley (Mail and Ken t Howerton IHusl d ial in same day, sam e ti me , same corner. an d the lead went to Hicks, fo llowed by Sal mon, Berkel ey , J eff Blix (YZ) an d Ken t Howerton (H us) . Berk eley got past Sa lm on (still th e 25 0 leader ) and i n h erite d th e lead whe n Hicks' ex pa ns i on c ha mber ca me adrift. Meanwhile , How erton was starting t o pu t pressure on Blix for th e seco nd 250 spot . When th e wh ite flag came ou t, Berk eley st ill had th e lead, foll owed by Sa lmo n. How er t o n pulled up righ t besid e Blix in seve ral turns, b u t th e Yamaha pilot fini shed a co up le of feet ah ead of th e T e xan. Ron Huffman (Pen) followed th em in for fo ur th 25 0. Mark Peters ca me in ei gh th overall, seco nd Op en. T o d d again took t he lead a t the star t of the sec o nd mo to, again fo llowed by Salmon. Mike would pull away from everyb ody for th e next half hour. Howerton, Blix, Ma ye s and Hicks were moving up through th e p ack . By th e fo u rt h lap, Howerton was in third, only to get p assed by Berkeley on the sevent h . Don Hicks was on his way up , he passed Howerton on th e ninth lap to grab fourth. Blix was quite aw ay s behind Howerton and having his o wn battle with Mitch May es (Hus) over sixth. Todd took th e checke re d nag by about 20 sec o nds over Ri ck Salmon . Berkeley was in next, but Hick s, wh o was closing on R andy, fe ll in the las t tum . Fo rtunat ely , h e was not inj ured. Howerton fin ish ed fo u rt h, fo llo wed b y Blix an d Mayes. Ber keley took th e overall win in the Open Expert d ivision wi th a fi rs t and a sec o nd . Mike Todd was ru n ner-up , with a third and a firs t. Mar k Peters finished third, j ust out of the money. They paid th e fir st five positions in the 250 clash, and Ric k Sa lmo n took home th e largest su m with a pai r of firsts. Ho wert on and Blix were tied a t five points apiece , b ut Ken t got sec o nd overal l o n the basis o f his last rno to performance. Mitch Mayes got a seventh and a fourth fo r fo urth overall. Ron Huffman go t a fourth and an eigh th fo r fifth. In 125 Expert action , J im Ha le b lit zed th e pack fo r a firs t m ot o victory , aboard a Pen ton . By Dale Brown VALENCIA , CAL ., MARCH 29 Fo r spectators and Cycle News reporters, trying to keep track of the 125 Intermedi ates was a difficult task. You sec, they were ming led with th e Expert riders and the gro up as a wh ole refused to spread o u t. Through the entire first mota, th e ra cers were bunched as tightly as th e ring gap o n a j ust seized bik e . Gr eg Oesch (Hon) had t he lead from nag to nag, pursu ed by Larry Wa tkins (Ho n ). T he firs t Int ermed iate, Steve Merrifiel d (Hon ), wa s runnin g abou t four th in the 20 rider fiel d (evenly d ivided, by the way) . Not far behind w er e Glen Sturer (Hon) and Tom Morris (Pen) . As the rid ers slam me d over the gatefo r th e start of the second rnoto , an Intermed iat e, Tom Norris took the lead and t he n he started going fas t. He contin ued to pull away from Oe sch and Watkins an d h eld first to the finis h . Oesch and Wat kin s were first and seco nd Experts. T hey san d wiched anothe r Intermedi a te Sturer , wh o go t a th ird ove ral l and sec o nd In termed iate. Mo rris d idn "t ge t a nother chance to blit z the Experts, as th eir star t was separa ted . He d id win his div ision quite handily, th ough . Ru ss Am m on (Suz) t ook second. Stu re r go t a fourth, to wr ap up second o verall, behind Morris, ahe ad of Ammon . Oes ch led the Experts a rou nd again , flag to flag. Brett Rooke, Honda mounted, fo llow ed him in. Bill Sherman (Suz ) was the on ly non -Honda rider 10 finish in th e t op th ree. Overall, it was Oesch, Watkins ' (2-2.5 ), and Rooke (6 -3-2).
