By John Ulrich SAGE PARK, ·C A L. , MAR. 30 T h e B urroughs High Sch ool Burro s MX Club held its first motocross at Sage Park to day. T he thing that set thi s high schoo l race apart fro m othe rs was th e fac t that almost th e entire desert city of Ridgecrest wi th a population of about 25 ,000, go t beh ind the event. J o e McCui ston, a teacher and Burros MX Club spons or, said " It wa s just amazing the amo un t of co op era tio n we re cei ved." W ar r en Mu r chi son, one of McCuiston 's co ho r ts , described it as be ing "like hitting a vein of go ld ." The sch o ol went a t it in a b ig wa y . T ro p hies and plaques were made in w o odshop clas ses d i re cted by Murchison, 120 trophies being built in o ne day by his five woodshop classes . Lo cal merchants donated a total of $ 4 00 to th e project, Sage Park managem en t (and alumni) donated track an d wa tertruck use , Ridge crest Ambulance Serv ice donated a two man crew, an d th e so ph om o re class sold re fresh ments. T he dona ted funds will be used to buy ap pro pri ate p rizes and ac cessories for all the racers (not jus t the winners), to be presented a t an awards ·din ner dona ted by a local rest auran t in a cou p le of week s. Miss Motocross, Sally Canern ILl, runnersup Zindi Homer and Denise Zurn with Joe McCuiston. Pre-ra ce en th usias m was gene rated by two pe p rallies with bands an d cheerleaders at the 18 00-studen t schoo l. St ude nts rep o r ted th at th e MX rallies drew more peopl e than any foo tball rally in school history. T hey even elected a "Miss Motocross" fo r the race. Posters advising of grudge races were all over t he pla ce, having been painted by th e art classes. "Can Mad Brad beat Ro cket Robby ?" askcd one rhe to rical ly . T he town support and enth usiasm was easy to see at t he race, held on a blustery day on a largely fiat, sandy and fast tra ck buill on a gentle slope ove rlooking th e most magnificent desert vista one co uld ever hop e fo r. Over 400 spec tators paid o ne dollar to watch 60 racers di ce i l o u t in six t h re e-moto races, as well as a m uc h bi lled facu lty race du rin g an in te rmiss io n. (Which Mur ch ison ran away with.) T he organization was pr etty tight. T he amazing par t was th at th e stude n ts put it toge t her ran, and sco red the race th emselves, with a little help from McCuison . T he race star te d off fift een minu tes late after eig ht p re-pai d racers didn 't show up . T he o nly o ther s ig n i f ica n t delay was wh en th e amb ulance had to ha u l awa y o ne racer after a big endo, Sage Park co -ow ne r Mike Ayers immedia te ly start ed passing around a ha t to collect funds to pay fo r th e racer's $60 ambulance ride, a practice he always en co urages at hi s track. Denise Meterier had such an easy time smoking the Powd er Puff class th at she had ti me to nip off a bunch of dudes hanging aro und m aking wise cr ac ks. She . was just the fastest girl aro und t hat day , lap ping her co mpe ti tion in each moto. The 125 Senior race held the most spectator int erest. The big question was whether Brad Eyre, holder of the Sage Park 125cc lap recor d (alias Mad Brad l or Robb y Cosner (Roc ke t Robby would win. Robby d id it, j um pi ng into the lead at t he start of all three mo tos, In the fir st moto, Brad closed a bit on hun , w ith both of them opening up a huge gap in fr ont of the p ack. They we re lappin g pe op le at th e ends of mo to s. Robby always wo n . Neil Christman, ri di ng a fantastically old Hodaka 90 in the 100 Senior class looked like a sure winner un t il his bike q ui t. In the third mo to he j ust plain left everybody behind, incl udi ng the many riders on Yamaha 100s. T hen, just a few lap s fro m the finish, he was ou t w he n his bike stoppe d o n the lon g straight. T hat straigh t was so lon g, smooth, and fas t that leaders in each class were act ual ly t ucking in fo r m os t of its len gth , ala road race and Mile sty le. 1 2 5 J unior class was T he be rm -ju mp ing city. In th e first mo to , the lead er , Bill Ea rle, lost th e lead wh en he overshot a berm on the fir st Iap , He go t going and took it b ack by the second lap, passing four gu ys in t he proc ess. Terry Burklund moved up o n Ear le, an d was rea d y wh en Earl e o versho t th e sa me b erm agai n on t he last lap , and he too k the lead and th e moto w in . Earl e re cov ered in ' ti me t o take a di stan t seco nd . Burklund grabbed the lead at th e s~ar t of the seco nd mot o, building up a five second lead over Earle, who, in th e process of chasing Bur kl und , got 22 seconds in front of fast half o f the p ack , which was anot he r 14 second s in fron t of th e slow half o f the pack. Both Burklund and Earle lapped people like crazy in this mo to, and finished o ne -two. Every lap fro m start to finish , the pair picked up five to eight seco nds on the mai n pa ck. Third moto finishes gave Burklund the overall 125 Junior win, with Ear le second. Randy Craw fo rd rode a new KX250 to t he overall win in the 250 Senior class, then af ter each mo to loaned it to Lar ry Krere, who use d it to take home the Open Senior class win. Of co urse , he was the only one in th e class, but he smoked t he J unior s ru nni ng in t he same mo to , anyway .
