N a t on ly th at , it wo rks. T he muffler mellow s an d red uces the ex haust no te of any bi ke it is installed on. It in clu des a built -in U.S. Forest Service approve d spa rk arrestor , an d mu ffles wi th a silicon rubber sleeve which the sound waves have to go around to reach yo ur cars. The ma terial itself absorbs sound, too. It ne ver needs any repacking. Dyn o tes ting using the Murp hy Muffler as an add-on silencer/spa rk arresto r on a tun ed ehamber showed two th ings: T he Mur phy Muffl er did n ot cause a po wer loss grea ter tha n those caused by " fac tory equip men t" ad d on muffl ers installed o n tuned pipes below 7,000 R PI\I, ye t was quie ter. Above 7,000 R PM on the smal l-bor e test bi ke, there was a 10% pow er loss re lative to the per form an ce of the same pipe with a bolt on mu ffl er sold as fac tory eq uipme n t o n several rnoto cro ssers. How ever , tests show that whe n used with a pipe spe cif ica lly des igned and tu ne d for use wit h a :\Iur ph y Muffler, th er e is n o significant power loss at any RPM. In fac t, the re is a mid -range gain. The gain in quietn ess ove r othe r silencer/sp ark arres to rs mak es the conversion well worth while. If you can ride quietly in an are a, you can pr obably ride longer. A rider co uld ad d a very hot (an d lou d ) tuned exhaust syst em to his bik e, add a Murphy Muffler, and be st reet lega l, While the Murp hy l\luffler will poss ibly ta ke a bit of the edge off the p ipe (unless th e pip e was designed for use wi th -t he Mu rph y Mu ffl er }, that po wer drop will be less than th e increase a ttain ed over stock - yo u sti ll gain in the end. Th e y d o not have steel kick plates like m ost boo ts. Th e bu ckles are accep tab le, b ut not especially trick.
