CMC Scrambles By Rex Backman CHICO, CAL., MAR. 10 In th e 75cc Mini class Doug Geist (Hon) took the win. Geist led from start to finish with his only c h allenge b eing Wade Wilson (Ind). Geist was able to hold on for the win as Wad e fell trying to p as s . Th e lOOcc Mini class bel on ged to John Sudburry (Ya m ). Sudburry won with a huge lead, leading th e race th e entire len gth. I t was Sudburry's fifth st raigh t win a t th e scr ambles, t aking second place was Tom Odekirk (Ya m). Brad Sander s {Hod ) took th e 100 No vice w in . Sander s t ook th e le ad on the firs t turn and never looked back. In second pl ac e was Lan ce Lollar (Yam ) third was Bob Cerv antes a lso o n a Yam ah a. Honda rider Larry Newman too k th e overa ll win in the 125 No vice class. Newman h ad to hold o ff a d etermined J o n Zimmerman on a Elsi no re. T h ird pl ace belonged t o Mike Gr an ger on a Suzu k i. The 250 · Novice class was won by Maurice Merrill (H on ). Merr ill lea d the en ti re race never reall y ch all en ged by a ny o ne, second pl ace was Gary Elliot (Hon) a nd slipping in for third was Gary Castill o (Hon) . The Open No vice class belonged t o Maico rid er Les Lollar who rode a gr eat race . Les m ounted on his sp eedy Maico took th e win with a co m an d ing lead over sec o nd place rider Don Fischer also on a Maico. I The 25 0 Junior class w as won by Del Becker ridi n g a borrowed 250 Penton. On th e unfamiliar bike Becker lead from star t to finish bu t he had to hold off Buhaco rider J on Woo a nd H onda rid e r Cr ai g Cain. A t the fin ish line Becker was followed b y Wo o and t he n Cain. The 125 Expert/J unior class was won by J e ff Geist (Ho n). After a slow start, wh ich saw Geist go in to t he tu m in b ack o f t he pack , he d ecided tha t the only place t o be was ou t front. J eff gassed it t o th e fron t and by th e second t um he was in the lead , tha t's wh ere he sta yed fo r th e remainder o f th e ra ce. In a close second pl ac e was J im H u bbard on his YZ. In th ird place and first Junior was Del Becke r (Ho n ). The 25 0 Exp ert class was m or e of a end u rance ra ce than anything else . When the wh it e flag dropped th e re were ten bikes running. With the drop o f th e checkered nag th ere were only tw o. Greg Ferguson ( Bu l) took th e lead on th e first lap and held on un t il the sec ond lap when Penton rider Greg McKinney got by with Fe rguson chasin g him and Dan Peterson chasing Ferguson. The three riders pulled awa y fro m the rest of the pack (or what was left of it) the n Ferguson dropped out when his Bul began to give him t ro u ble . McKinney went on fo r the win followed by Da n Peterson. G reg Ferguson fared a little better in the Open Expert/J un io r race. Ferguson and hi s Bultaco grabbed the lead on the fir st lap and held on fo r the win. Jim Heinrich was second place fini sher and first Junior rider on a Bultaco, In third place was Mike O'Brian on a Yamaha who was second Exp er t. Greg Rodgers was second Junior rider in fourth place o n a Maico. •
