. Cordis Brooks cops his first First rn ~ Jackrabbits' Hare and Hound III .... t "d'" l' O"l ..-t By Jim Stewart RED MO UNTAIN , CAL ., MAR. 17 Jim Fishback jumped into an early lead today, looking for his second overall win of the '74 racing season, only to have it end on the second loop when his gear box blew out. Cordis Brooks, who was following Fishback, slipped into the finish line for first overall. Mark Ade nt ha d his string of firsts put to a sud den halt by Cordis' Overa ll and first 250 win. This was a first for both ride rs, Mark's first time not winning the 250 class since changing to Penton, and Co rdis' first win in th is class, after switching from a 175 Bul to a 250. A:C. Bakken picked up another firs t in the Op en class, after Fishback's DNF. A.C. was running fl.ft h through the pits, but also got by J im Wotring on the second loop . Needless to say , Jim got himself yet another top four finish, which he has d on e every week end th is year, Fo rm er num be r onto, Art Knapp , p owe r e d by George Zuber, an d Srnoke bo mb Gae t z on the second loop, ending up fifth Overall and second Heavyweight, In case you m ight be wondering what happened to the riders that were in fr on t of Knapp, they went as follows ; George Zuber, who is not known too much in the desert, ended up with seventh 250 Expert, after let ti ng Doug Winch<:11 and J eff Kirk slip by him on the second loop. Winchdl had to sett le for Kirk's dust, as that's what he ate most of the ti m e, Doug was six th 25 0 Exp er t, whil e J<:ff rode hard fo r fi fth . Srnokebomb was sixth Overall into th e pi ts , but after lett ing Jimmy Brown and Knapp by, he fi ished onto pl ace more, n but third Open Expe r t, J imm y Brown i s fa s t being remembered for hi s riding ab ility o f a few ye ar s b ack, refreshing every onto's minds by yet another hi gh overall p lacing, (fifth Overall, third 25 0 Expert], Jimmy had to do a littl e passing himself on the second loop, working his way by Smokebomb, Knapp. Bill Becker will soon be riding in t he very co mpetitive 250 Expert class as he picked up another Amateur win in the Jackrabbits Hare and Hound, at sixteenth Overal l, Som e five places later , D. Brewer, Jr. ca rne in for the first spot in the Op en Amateur class . I hope these two enjoy their class wins, since soon they will be battling it out with the likes of Adent 'an d Bakk en , Bill Friant looks to be out to get his old number plate ba ck this year, as he got himself another first Division II a t six teenth Overall . I bet it is more fun • The lo ng dowrmilfswere papular with trailbike rid ers. Just put it in high gea r and let it rev. That looks suspicio usly like a place to get a tan k card m arked. WhiCh J ackrabbit ge ts the hono r? Who was that.-fuzzy-headed rider? knowin g yo u can fmish in the teen s now and get a first in t his class , instead of coming in second Overall as in the Moose Run a co up le of ye ar s "1(0 and getting second 175. Jdf Jdfri<:s and local residen t Neil Christman held down the two and three spots in thi s class. B. Wallingford had been leading this class through the pits , but unfortunately lady luck j um ped on Friant 's Penton as he was in hot pursuit. You can almost always tell when a co ur se: had several down hill s in it as the Trail bike riders will always say how birchen the course was , wh ile the Open bike riders hate it, mainly because they got passed by onto on one of the steep d own gra des, Chuck Cartledge got his moment um up en o ugh on these hills, to tak e him to first 100. Several pl aces later, Bob Rutten rode in for second. Number on to trail ace, Larry Roeseler , has b een seen alm ost every wee ke nd leading this class through the pi ts and way up in the Overall positions, but unfortunatdy nobody seems to be able to spot him at the finish. Robbie Zamora picked up another of his already hal f dozen Trail Amateur wins , ahead of Louis Darling Jr. Rick Morrow rounded out the top three in this class. Patrick Johnson an d Rich Smith had th eir own personal battle going for the ungloried, but co veted , first 175 Amat<:ur, with Johnson bdng th<: quickcr. Jim Nauman d idn't rid<: too m uch last y<:ar as a on<:·two·fiy<: Amat<:ur but looks to b<: 'giving it anoth<:r try as h<: r<:m<:mb<:r<:d which way th<: tbrattl<: tum<:d (or co uld have: fo rgo tt<:n wa<: th<: bra k<:s w<:r<:?) Anyway h<: was third 175 Amat<:ur. L<:ading th<: Novic<:s at th<: bomb and fmally working his way past a flaying DKW, Dan Phillips took th<: I<:ad and k<:pt it until th<: ch<:ck<:r<:d. Dan has rid dcn v<:ry f<:w district 37 raecs, an d at th<: pr<:se:nt timc, do<:sn' t cyton hayc his own bikc, b ut wh <:n give:n a b ik<: to rid<: Iik<: th is w<:<:k<:nd, h<: will w in. K. Pilla rs got th<: n<:xt b<:st thing though, s<:cond Oy<:rall and first Op<:n Novi c<:. Anoth<:r Op cn bik<: was th<: next to reach ' the finish in th e Novice class , piloted by E. Schuler . Following Shuler was the fir st gre<:n plate Division II rider, Andy Klein. Sandwich<:d b<:tw<:<:n these: cc opposites was a 250, pointed in the right direction b y Fr<:d Swepstow. Way up in the Ove:rall Novices was the first Trail No vice , Stcve Shook. Steve wa s ninet<:<:nth Novice, and the second trail bik <: rider, J erome Patridge was way up, too, at thirty. Fr<:d Coppi bl<:w off seV<:raJ larg er bik<:s himsdf, being the ne xt 100 to reach th<: cold beer at fi fteth Novi c<:. I hope th e sponsoring c1ubs 'do not get in a habit of se:ndi ng fin isher pins throug h th <: mail. Not rec<:iving a fmi sh<:r pin at the end o f a hard 90 mil es is like no t se:eing dang<:r m arks at a road cross ing; both ca n be yay disappointing. Several rid<:rs com plain<:d of losing the course b <:cause o f poor marking, in cluding Fishback and th<: event ua l winn<:r Cordis Brooks. If t he y can ' t follow the co urs c,j usl lh ink wherc se:veral of th e Novi ce s migh t have gone. Results 12 _ 400 Ex : 1. A.C . Ba kken : 2 . Art Knap p; 3 . S m okebom b Gaet z. 400 Am : 1. D .
