EVERYBODY~ (I(lE CRe Valley MX NEEDS A'TRIP TO THE (lEANERS: By The Shadow MOORPARK , CAL., MA R. 10 A turnout of 45 members of the Old Timers Club spiced th e act ion here Sunday, as the California Racing Club played host to its best turnout ever at Valley Cycle Park. Results o f the park's trackdressing efforts were ra th er interesting to listen to; Seasoned riders seemed to think th e bulldozer b it was making th e course into th e Hollywood Freeway , ' while those not so well versed at MX competition cheered the 'dozer every step of the way. MEET 'THE (lEANERS' FROM GUMOUT. Another mishap was due to a jer k who somehow chose the exact wrong moment to cross the track. Naturally the "walker" wasn 't injured beyond the point of a minor concussion. One th ing for sure, th e kid will h ear motorcycle noises rin gin g in hi s ea rs for sometime to come. On th e o ther hand, the hapless rider left with two broken wrists. The Novice unit of th e Old T imers Club had th e biggest turnout, w ith 19 ride rs vyi ng for eight trophies. Top honors we nt to S.B. Michaels, wh o literally "blew ' em off th e course" with th ree straight wins. In th e Amateur warfare, 10 riders bat tled fo r four trophies, with Paul Black win ni ng with 10 poin ts. to sp ar e over second pl acer Steve Pyle. Joe Pears on won all but the first moto in takin g the Exp ert class. It took a first plac e ride on his final moio to secure th e victory for Pearson, as h e ended th e day deadlocked at 500 points with second p lace fini sher Orie Cole. Final ly . 10 po in ts made the difference at th e Master level, with Bill Todd jus t edging out John Siebrandt, 51 0-500. The Powder Puff com pe tito rs got the honor of a fre e race this month, part o( the new CRC program for 1974. " Freed om " drew 16 speedy gals on motorcycles, with Su e Fish , r idi ng he r trusty Hodaka, domina ting all of the action in 100 Powder Puff. Sandy Gonzales, a Honda rider, was on hand to give Sue a run for her money, taking home first in class at 125 Powder Puff. I n the 175- 250 Powder Puff competition, Karen Abbott (Suzuki), was a winner via a grand slam. If you ever ge t the chance, be sure to catch the Sue F ish act on th e tr ack - and after the race at the trophy presentation. Both performance s are worth the price of admission. Bes t race o f the day was the 125 Nov i c e c o m petiti on wh ere SCOll Wolford (Suz ), and R ick Park (H us) , finished th e day kn o tted at six poin ts ap iece . Wolford , who was three-two-one on th e da y, was th e overall winner based on th e best sho wi ng on his fi nal moto. Par k , who opened with two straight win s, fell to a disastrous fo urth pl ace on his final r ide '- a fatal m istake with th e Olympic scoring system in effect th is year. In th ird place, one point off the first -place pace, was Mark Co st ah aude , rid in g a Honda. Hal Strau ss, rid ing a CZ, ca me int o his own at lo ng last, pos tin g a very im pressive 250 Expert victory, which he lit erall y ear ned by inc hes. Somehow the first two ri ders bumped to ge th er, wi th t he resul t ing "split" givin g S traus s a clear shot up the middle to th e chec kered flag. It was the win he ne eded , as it was strictly "no con test" on the fina l moto. Mike Lendt proved a 1972 CZ C'd I1 still win.
