Streakers, sheep invade Hare &Hound By Jim Stewart f RED MOUNTAIN , CAL., MA RCH 10 - After ram all week in the big city, most desert racers were planning on the worst weather possible for the race this weekend. But what a surprise. Wann weather, blu e skies, no wind, but best of all, no dust. With so much goingfor th e Invaders, so mething just had to go 8 wrong, and it did. It see ms th at th e BLM not only permitted t he Invaders to hold their six th annu al Hare and Hound in this part o f Red Mounta in area, but also allowed some 10,000 sheep t o graz e in the area t o b e u sed as a sm oke b o mb run. What a surprise to those wh o wer e ju st flogging it to the sm o ke bomb on Saturday practicing, t o b e suddenly surrounded by live wool It wo uldn' t have been so bad, except they were not danger marked. After nego tiatin g w ith th e sheep, they agre ed to move upon hearing that so me eigh t hundred glo ry bound desert racers would b e co min g through this same area th e next d ay . As the same eight hundred riders lined up for the dropping of the b anner, a streaker, not o n fo ot but on a d eser t sled , strea ke d acr o ss t he d esert in front of th em . Th e streaker didn' t seem to affe ct J im Fish b ack in the least as he streaked (meaning he wen t fast) to th e smoke bomb so me two m iles o ut, reaching th e burning t ires wit h a comfo rtable lea d. In ho t pursu it w er e Mark Adent, Wayne Co o k, Ar t Kn app and Kevin Hastings. --- Into th e p its firs t was an unid en t ified 100 's MC member with a co mmanding lead, w hich was d enoun ced by t he p it r cre w s as not b eing true fi s t Overall. Next came the ac tu al leader, 400 CZ mou nted J im Fish bac k, w ho lo o ked to be enjoying h is tre men dous lead. This lead continued to th e fin ish lin e. Following Fish b ack the whole race was newly Pen to n-sponso red Mark Adent. This was Mar k 's first ri de on h is own Pento n , a ' 74 . It sure soun de d healthy, but w asn ' t fas t eno ugh t o catch the fly in g Fish . J immy Bro wn was th e m ysterio us number 37x run nin g fifth Overall on the firs t loop, w earing a Bay Ar ea Bu ltaco jers ey. Follow ing Brow n th ro ugh the pits was A.C. Bakken . Unfortunately, the la tter of th ese rider s d idn 't reach t he finish lin e in this place, w hile J immy went o n to th ird Ove rall, second 250 Expert . Wayne Cook w as holding d own th e third Overall p osit io n thro ugh the p its , b ut never reach ed the check ered fla g, along wit h 2 50 mounted Cord is Brooks who was ru nning six th Overall. J eff Kirk running seventh was ano ther one loo per . Regular top fo ur finis h J im Wotrin g, was sixth in the 250 class t h rough t he pits, but after th e drop-o uts o f Cook, Broo ks, Kirk a nd A.C., he was ab le to move up to sixth Ove rall, third 25 0 Expert . T his no w keeps his re cord clean, finis hing in the t o p fo ur 250 Experts every weekend since the first of th e year, ex cept in the Sandblasters' race in which he was disqual ified. Ar t Kn ap p, wh o was really pegging it to the bomb, also t oo k advan tage of his other fe llow Experts ' mista kes, t o m ove up into the fo urth Ove rall position behind Brown, second Open Expert. This was an improveme nt of so me seven Overall p osit io ns compared to what he was ru n ning in t he pits (eleven th). Mik e Caudilo must have see n Knapp doing this, (he foll ow ed him t he whole w ay ), to reach the fini sh line fifth Overall , third O pe n. Steve Ho lladay ca me fro m th irteen th in the pits to seventh Over all by th e finish (fourth 25 0), follo we d by th e fo urth Ope n b ik e, K. McKean , w ho was way d own at thirteenth Overall on the first loop . Rich Lee worked h is way into th e top ten Overall. Bill Beck er lo o ks to have gotten himsel f a nother transfer toward Expert as he finis hed te nt h Overall, first Overall A ma teur, Bill w as ru nning te nth thro ugh the pi ts, but h is bike load ed up in the pits and h is ga s tank kep t co mi ng off the seco nd loop . He h ad to hold it on with his knees. T his ma y ex p lain h is failu re t o improve in spi te of all the DNFs. Seco nd overall Amate ur and fi st r Op en w ent to A. May. While four p laces later A. Hull pulled in fo r t he sec on d sp o t in this class , no t too far in front of the se co nd 250 Amatuer Don Ly on. Do n fin ish es in the to p four Amateurs almost every weekend, a nd soon should be an Exper t. Dw ayne Car t er and h is Honda fo ur str oke got ano ther overall win in the No vic e class. Se cond Novice was Eve rt Kernren aar, also m o unt ed o n a Honda. Nu mber 829x was t he second Novice to reach t he fi nis h, bu t was fir st 250 . Ed Rodin e was first 250 Novice on the firs t loop but le t R ob ert Wadl o w b y o n th e second. Foll owing Rodin e to t he fi nish was Dan ny Phillips aboard a borrowed 25 0 Yamaha. First trail Exper t went to Chuck Car tl edge , while Mar c Cart wrig ht got him self yet another 100 Amateur win. Num ber 818 c was fir st 17 5 Ex pe rt a he ad o f Monte Lee and Ernie Mahoney . Meanwhile, b ack in the Am ateurs in th is class, Rich Sm ith was taking th e class win. Bill Friant w as first Divisio n 11 an d Larry Ro eseler in th e Trail class were lea ding their classes o n th e firs t loop, but lik e so many o th ers, never received o ne of the Invaders' finis he r p ins. As the man y sp ectators waited fo r the return of th eir co n q ue rin g heroes, Art Knapp gets the way pointed out to him. two riders streaked p ast t he fi nis h. Sue ,' who ta kes resu lts, said t hey were Alle n Lund an d Dingus J r. from DRA and had nothin g t o streak abo ut.
