What would m otiva t e a person to become a referee? Would it b e a desire to d o go od for your fe llo w m an? How about t he ego trip of b eing the one to make th e d ecisio n th at co uld affect th ousa nd s o f d ollars in purse m oney? It co uld b e all o f th ese but in reality it is probably gre ed. Yes, that ' s genuine greed sp elled m oney. The Speedway Racing Association is lo oking for a few good men. Men who know enough ab o u t ra cing and the few rules that go with their type of racing to become effective officials. The pay is fair, but you're not going to get ri ch. You ge t to bring a few friends o r you r family alo n g to the ra ces . But when push co m es to shove, y o u 're all alone in th e cen te r of the race tr ack armed o nly wi th a soft covered rule b o ok. Tony Wankel of Encinitas barely m ade it in t o sec ond p lace ahead of J am es Marv in . If Ja mes wasn' t such a b ig dude, I think he wo uld have a real fighring chance at running off wit h firs t p lace in th is class. He's got his starts down t o a scie nce, and he goes thro ug h the turns just as fast, if not faste r, than a nyone else in the class. Some i n teresting new b ik e-r id er co mb ina tio ns showed up to nig ht. Among th em were Arthur Junker (Den nis' younger brother ) riding a 400 Maic o to a sec o nd pl ace fin ish in the Open Novice class. T he n Dennis go t on it and rode it to a Special Expert victory a hea d o f none other th an Mark Reich ert, who w as tak ing it easy br eaking in a new 3 6 0 ! Don "T- Bo ne" Gri gsb y was busy "breaking" hi s new YZ. What followed was o ne o f t hose typi c al in -between -r a c es wrench thrash ing sessio ns. 11 ended in a plug foulin g session on the starting lin e. And if that w asn't en ou gh, Larry Bird was having fun alternat ing b etween d oing fu ll le ngth ba ck st rai ght wheelies a nd seizing hi s new Montesa wh ile taking sec o nd in th e·500.
