a charging Kenny Ro berts on t he fo urth lap w it h R ob erts rolling b y on the next. Steve Baker re mained a short distance back in fourth . Dave Smith and Gary Fisher had hooked up on the third lap and were having the race for fifth aU to themselves. First Fisher, and then Smith would lead going side-by-side on the high speed banking and nose-to-tail th rough the infield, with an occasional bit of fairing banging with their fists to break the tension. By the halfway flag on lap seven of the shortened ra ce (down to 50 miles fro m 100), t he lead had swapped hands seven times at different parts of the track with Roberts taking over where it counted for the sixth through eighth laps. Nixon rode a distance behind, in .third, with Baker in fourth and almost t he entire field separating the Fisher/Smith o r Smith/Fisher duo in fifth place. As good as t he race for first was, the race for fifth was just as exciting. In sixth p lace was Ted He nte r, charging and hoping to finish, followed by John Long, with Marty Lun de and Bob Rectenwald keeping thin gs honest. Castro decided second wasn' t good enough and went by Roberts to take over t h e lead on Lap Nine as t he pair weaved thro ugh traffic. Two laps later the Castro/Roberts Express sandwiched Jim Graham o n the front straight. Castro went lo w and Roberts we nt h igh as th ey swooped aro u nd th e slower -ider, Ro ber ts regained t he lead and ihen lo st the point t h ro ugh the infield . Nixon began to close o n the Yamaha fa ctory riders as the front-running trio - Roberts in the lead : - b ega n the final lap. Don Castro regained the lead out of the chicane with Roberts right in his draft and Nixon taking a high line to get as much drive as possible off the banking in tum four. Starter Duke Pennell dropped the checkered flag on Castro as Roberts just barely managed to shut the door on Nixon a t the finish line. Steve Baker appeared several seconds back in fourth and then the Fisher/Smith rocket took a photo finish in a dead heat across the line. Castro, elated after winning his first road race, was grinning from ear to ear in the winners circle while Ken ny Ro ber ts, a bit more subdued in the role of Grand National Cham p io n , took his bows for second. Third place Nixon, a little older and wiser, quipped "They're my id ols. " and then added" ...at least fo r today." • Results 25 0 ExpertjJ u ni or Co m b ined 1. Don Castro; 2 . K enny Rober t s: 3.
