When Ago made it back around the course and entered p it row he was mobbed by enthusiastic fans who carried him to his garage. Two full planeloads of Italian fans had traveled to Daytona to watch th e American racing d ebut of t h eir hero a nd they we re certainly well rewarded. Agostini joined Roberts and Wilvert in victory lane after a delay of a half hour or so . An ela ted but exhausted Agostini spoke briefl y, " I am very happy to be in America. The first time I race here , I win . The first t ime I ride Yamaha, I win. " Following the v i ctory lane celebra tio n, Patrick Pons, from Paris, Fran ce , plunked down $5,000 in cash in front of AMA Referee Charlie Watson and announced that he was claiming Ago's bike. Claim ing had been limited to the winner's bike -b y the AMA 's Execu tive Board in a meetin g on Friday, after rumors o f massive claim ings by European rider s had spread through Daytona. Agostin i showed up wi th in th e half hou r time lim it and plunked down $5,0 0 0 in Briti sh pounds, but Ago lost in the required draw in g and Pons, who had qualified 16th fastest for th e race, had purcha sed w hat Yamaha Motors European Ra cin g Team Manager, Rod Gould, d escr ib ed a s " One very worn-out motorcy cle.
