CMC Carlsbad ByJohnBethea CARLSBAD, CAL. , MARCH 10 A comparatively light turnout of 200 riders greeted CMC's return to Carlsbad, but it still was an eventful day of racing for young Richard Grafton on his priv ateer Yamaha. After two months of some pretty hot riding - but without a single moto win - Rich pulled off th e 250 Pro sweep to collect his first ever CMC pro victory. Danny LaPorte (Pen) ha d a chance after working hard in the first round to finish second. Then, in the final, he again took up the char ge in the place position until his Motoplat went out and he had to push back to the pits with a DN F that left him eighth ove rall. Don Bongiorno (Hon) settled in for second money wi th the aid of consist en t rides. Mitch Mayes (Hus) , riding only his third CMC pro event, finished in th e mo ney for the first time with third OA. New Hampshire 's No . I rider, Charles lo tt (Hon), took a fourth , besting David Hopkins (Pen) in the final m oto by two positions to break their tie over all at 13 points apiece. Two years between pro w ins is a long time, but Albert May (Mai) w ill still take the cash for today 's 5 00 sweep over Luke Messer (Mai ). He had to work for it, especially in th e first moto when Lars Larsson (Mai) j um p ed to the lead and held it for half t he race. For a while, it was easy to see how Lars five years ago was the first CMC rider ever to win all three classes in one day. The youthful exuberance of May a nd Messer took over and Lars settled for third. In the next round, after May and Messer got good starts, Lars found himself caught on the outside of turn one and was way back ab o u t ninth. With few lap s remainin g, he finally moved into fourth sp o t where he finished even with Steve Shipkey (Mai). Bu t Steve took third in the mota which forced Larsson back into final pay position. Albert Ortiz and Curits Lessel, fifth and six th overall, made it a clean Maico sweep. Rick Sheren (Hon) seems to have sorted out the problems that have b eset him d uring the last three months. In the first moto be grabbed th e lead over 125 ace Many Smith and held it fo r several laps in the first moto. Dav e Eropkin (Han) was up there d icing away until h e overshot a berm on th e fir st lap. Smith , on the factory Honda, pushed hard taking over o n lap t hree and led fo r the rest of the day. Sheren, meanwhile, was ca ugh t lat e in the race b y Bobby Maxwell (Yam) and ended up third. Next round, Sh er en was seco nd with Maxwell closing when Bob su dd en ly lo st it, and remounted only t o h ave h is chain come off half a lap later, putting him bac k to tenth and out of the overall. Richard Ramirez (Han) , in his second pro ride, go bbled u p th e advantage, fail ed to fa ll o nce , a nd took third overall with a four. three count. Mik e Bell (Hon), the CMC poin ts leader , claimed fourth and.final pay spot. Riding his first race as an Intermediate , John Smith (Han) topped the 125s by winning the fir st two motos then settling in for sixth in the final. In the 250 Intermediate Jim Ruth (Mai) c o n t i n u e s to look smo o th and im pressive winning his se co nd daytime start (He won his first outing, too.] . David Charette (Mai) won the final 5 0 0 moto and with it the ov er all , acing out Steve Zoumar as (Mai) by one point. Only three Jun iors wer e ab le t o keep a sustained drive and swee p their respective classes. Rick Laughery (C Z) ' tarn ~d the 500 clan, Corey Rudoulph (Yam ) settled all arguments in th e 25 0 Division 11 and Doug Boyd (Yam) cleaned the sm all 100 gro u p . Greg Bezar (Yam) to ok t he 125 Division II without much of a s truggle, ' which allowed him to relax a bit in th e final round with a third after winning the first two ra ces. Division I 250 winner, Larry Lutz (Han ), had it much tougher as he and Jack McCormick (Yam) went into the tbird race tied with three points each. Larry took second and J ack fourth with third overall, Rodney Winfree (Han), winning. Bruce Waters (Hon) parlayed a third and two se conds into a narrow victory of on e point over Mark Harrington (Hon) in Division 1. Double winner Dennis Beat (Han) crumbled to third overall when he finished 12th in the second moto.
