By John Bet hea CMC Irwindale CARLSBAD, CAL., FEB . 24 Bryar Holcomb, riding both the 250 and 500 classes today at Carlsbad Raceway, bit off as much as he could chew and pulled off a very well-ridden double against all the other top pros. T he best race had to have been the final 500 in which he and Billy Clements (Hus) got locked into a duel similar to the one Rex Staten and Mike Hartwig had here two weeks ago. Bryar held the lead but for the entire twelve laps Billy hounded him, several times pulling alo ngside and nearly passing. Billy won t he firs t round, with Bryar second , co m pleting overall honors. Bryar held on all the way for the win with Clements second a nd Albert May (Mai) taking th ird with a pair of 'em. Ove r in the 250 it was a bit easier for Holcomb as he won both rounds. Richard Grafton, on t hat privately sponsored YZ. charged in with a second but was o ut of it in the final w he n he an d Rich ar d Kastner (Bul) ta ng led on the straightaway h eading for tu rn t h ree early in the race. A ho le was ripped in the bottom of Kastne r's tank. Gas spewed out a n d ca ught fire, but was quickly ex tinguished. N either rider fi nished the moto , nor were they hurt. This gave Ran d y Myers (Bul), third in the fi rst race, the solid go-ahead for second overall as he occupied that position also in the final m o t o. Fo r aw h ile he began to close on Holcomb but saw he wasn't gonoa make it so slowed slightly to insure his runnerup position ahead of Nelson Whitehill (Hu s) , third overall with a p air of fifths. Marty Smith was back and raising havoc in the 125 Pros again , winning both rounds in runaway style. In his best finish ever as a pro, Dave Eropkin (Hon) cam e home second on points with a fourth and second while third overall Chuck Bower (Hon ) had a second and seventh. What cost him was a chain coming off in the second round. Mike Tripes (Hon) secured fourth over Ted Weeks (Ho n) . • Results 100 JRS: 1. Doug Boyd (Vam). 2 . Corkl Moore (Ya m) . 3. Tonight, in only the fourth pro meeting of the year at Irwindale, Jeff Vidic brought his Maico home to his fourth in a row, tying the standard. The first two rnoto victories were done fairly easily in the runaway style. when Val Tamietti (Hon) grabbed the lead in the th ird, Jeff wasn't too concerned in second place as he had the overall sewed up. Jim West (Hus} stuck right along with Vidic for the duration, several times p ulling up along side in hopes of passing , b ut was held off. Twice second to Vidic earlier, Bryar Holcomb (Bul) fo un d h im self in fo ur t h place and even though he rode a good, har d race, just could n o t fi nd an opportunity to sq ueeze by. He still managed secon d o verall. It wasn't to be Holcomb's night. T h ings really ca me undone when he and Chuck Lunde tangled in the King of the Hill feature just before half-time, T hat was the first ti me he went down. In the second 500 Pro he took another hard header on the res urfaced track and didn't eve n show up to race the third. West had a fairly easy time of things in the 500 once Holcomb crash ed out of the pi cture ; he swept the class with Luke Messer (1\1a i) taking second a nd Dan Barnes (C Z) third. Luke. who is still trying to get b ack in to shape after his spill last fall, appeared rather con te n t with his second. Joe Johnston (:'Iai) put on a show for the crowd . After a second and a third, Joe had the machine seize in the final round. A ngrily he pushed the bike over and started to walk away, then decided that wasn't enough. He went back and kicked it several times, then jumped on it. Finally, he pushed across the line for a fourth overall. • so KBIS AADlo 74 Th e Motorcycle Station Results Mini: 1.
