" Here's one wh o's both! She's Dolly Hays, and she's enough to make us wish we were a 17 year old motocrosser-about campus again. Dolly shares one thing with o th er Powder Puffers we've talked to, besides the obvious common ground of sex . She like s to race for exci te me n t and also, she say s, "To show the boys I ca n do an ything I want. " She d oes that pr etty well, and at times dates local motocrossers in her h ome t own o f Saugus, California wh o she ca n blow off in a race . Dolly, 16, is not just interested in motocross and bikes. Sh e plays flute and piccolo in the William S. Hart High School band an d orch estra , is pr eparing to be Drum Major for the marching band next year, and has been kn own to appear in Creative Dance shows at sch oo l. Not only that, she's a "B" st uden t , and w or rie s ab o u t her humanities teacher being a little different (Doesn't every high school stu de n t?) She does n ot like to work o n her bik e, hat es muddy tra cks , h as ridden her motocrosser to school a few tim es (On public roads, un t il the High way Patrol co mes th en she takes o ff cross co u n try .) It 's hard to ge t her to smile for pho tograp h s becau se she wo rri es abou t her b races showing, but they co m e o ff in a m on th or two . On e o f her je rseys adve rtises one o f th e com panies, another the othe r. Dolly go t her first bike (an Indian mini) with the in tentio n of racing, a nd that's what she has been doing since. rr-oving to a Ya maha and th en to th e Pen to n she now ow ns . A ft er he r firs t kn ee-dragging ride on a b ig-bo re st reet rod, she said " Gee, th is is as m uch fun as racing l" , and sta rte d taking lon ger lo o ks a t stree t b ike s, Doll y is int o mot orcyclin g very mu ch . But m ost o f all Doll y is a very nice yo ung lad y. More and more girls are getting in to motorcy cles and racing, and that's .really wh at thi s st o ry is all ab o ut. That's really fine .
