T he pa rk is sit uated on eight acres 0 f land being lo aned to th e project by the U.S. Navy, across the street from th e Lon g ~ Beac h Naval Station. T he p ark o pe n ing cu lm inate d three years o f w ork by th e S ~fe.t~ Council . a nd the Long Beach Minibike Committee towards obtaining a n earb y pl ace fo r lo cal you nge r riders to ri de th eir bike s. Anyone can come and ride, for a n ominal ad mission fee. T h e track is built o n p iles of used sandbla sting sand left b y th e Na vy , and has as much p otent ial as many o f the existin g c o m merci al " mo tocro ss" tracks in S outhern Cal iforn ia.....'hat sets t h is o n e apart is of co urse th e track surface itself, b eing sa nd. Park personnel are cu r ren tly working dirt in to the surface to firm it up , bu t as it is now ir's one soft t rac k. There is something t o be said fo r th a t , though, as it keeps sp eeds dow n and al so cushion s falls taken b y y o u ng ride rs. A no th e r sh orter track o n th e p ark locati o n is wi thin a fenced off min i area. T he track is hard dir t (com pare d to .san d ) an d flat, ou tlined b y old ti re s. ThtS is th e favorite rid in g place for m ost of ~he . m in i riders w ho visit the p ark, as th eir little wheel s just bog in th e sand of the o ther track. T he b iggest sim p le problem wi th the st ill-i n-rough stages p ark is labor.
