Pioneer scrambles *********************** By Bill Spencer OA KDALE, CAL. , FEB. 10 Whatever the rest of the world may be suffering in the way of crisis, today's winter scrambles were having nothing to do with that. Temperatures in the low 70's, a dry track, over 250 riders, tons o f spectators and a neat concession stand made for a wonderful day of motorcycle ra cin g at the Pioneer arena near Modesto. Neil MacDannaJd riding a 175 Penton in the 250 Expert class, easily outdistanced the field within the first lap leaving Ph il Anderson to hold off the charging pack. The best race of th e day came in the 125 Junior main with a terrific three .w ay battle for the checkered. Leading all but t he most important lap was Ch uck Goodrich. Keepi ng him honest during seven of eight laps was Mike Miller while Mike Bowling was t ry ing to work his way forward in near berserk fash ion. When th e white nag ca me out, Bowli ng m ade a bea utiful move on the outside of the first corner and got by Miller. Go ing into the back co rner, he got a wheel under Goodrich and for a second, had the lead . His problem here was that he was co ncen trating so har d on passi ng Goodrich tha t he forgot abou t Miller, w ho got underneath both riders as they were motocrossing on a berm and went on to take the checkered. The packed grandstand loved it so much they gave all a standing ovation. Dallas Davis switched from a 100 Yamaha to a 360 Yamaha with little effort and won the Open Novice class over Rick Rasmussen and Rich Bolton. Ted Davidson survived the best of the 125 Experts with brother Butch crashing and number one, Mark Smith doing the same. If you didn't catch that, Butch Davidson is back in the saddle o n a 125 Suzuki , It seems hard to believe but, 23 riders took o n t he 175 Novice class calling fo r four t rophies and that is the biggest 175 class I have ever see n. Steve Knouf took the win over Rod Forseth and Gary Vick. Mike Mo ntgomery took home two big I wins in the 125 and 250 classes. Results PEE-WEE MI NI : 1. Brian Sorenson (Tar) . 2. By Carl Sh ipman _ NEW 3mi. G rand Prix course ! _ G IANT M A JESTI C TROPH IES ! "Fun" is the key word throughout the book. Car l Shipman had fun writing the book. He had fun ta king pictures of his friends riding trials, and you'll have fun reading it, especially if you're just getting d ia led in to the trials scene. Far from being a tightly-organized text o n t rials riding, the book lea ds you t hrough a series of loosely inter-related pictorial essays from the basics of trials to so me of the fine points. Unless you 're a dead-serious student of the sport, it is this very looseness that m a k e s for an enjoyable literary introduction to trials riding and trials riders. Scattered throughout are bits and pieces of background knowledge on riding style, machine preparation, and event organization th at many experienced hands in the sport tend to overlook be cause they learned them so long ago . Throughout, Shipman presents his material, not as Tablets from The Mount, but as guidelines for acquiring some of the mind-set of the tri als enthusiast . Don't me morize a lot of the association rules in the appendix. They've been dated by change since the publication date, as have many of the author's remarks concerning trials bikes. (Though the book is timely enough to correctly an ticipate the Japanese invasion.) Most of the p hotos we re taken by the author. They a re abundant, liven up the copy, and thei r family-snapshot quality lends to the thread of fu n and humor that S hipman has woven. At tim es the aut hor leans too heavily on cert ain products (like Bultacos and his trials accessories). and many an expert will argue h is ideas point by point. Notwithstand ing, Shipman never loses sigh t of the one unifying co ncep t riding trials is good, clean, dir ty fun . Unless you alread y know too much about observed trials, I heartily recommend th at you chill down some wine, get your feet level with yo ur head, and spend an evening or an afternoon with this book. You'll enjoy it .
