It hadn't happened in years ••• By Bill Spencer LIVERMORE, CAL., FEB. 3 It hadn't happened in so long that the id ea in itself was pret t y far out. A Hillclimb at Carnegie Cycle Park just a few feet from "The Wall." The Campbell M.e. had fallen on bad ti mes with problems that t hey didn't want and with all the other controversy surrounding District 36 they decided on a fe w ru le chan ges, went ahead an d sched uled so me events , an d p ulled t he first one o ff successfully. T he w eather had tu rned around an d was absolu tely beautifu l. T he park was full from a CMC m otocross an d a ton of riders plus a good tu rnout o f spectators for the cl im b . If there is a local club t hat ca n handle a good climb, th is is t he on e as they did w it h over I 00 riders an d so me rea l fancy mach ines. The top NorCal hillclimbers we re present, including Jim T ru e and his "sudden death " Sam Arena Harley. Steve P i c atti s ho we d w ith a fueler / Triumph tha t co uld h ave co mpe ted a t the Winternational d rag races and t he World's Wrist Wrestling Champ, big Bill Harrison, rode wi th a bad b ack, on y et another big Goliath Harley. It see med like th e good old d ays with good old boys showing up that had never raced and lots of old timers to show them how. " I t had to be like the 1920's when Dud Perkins was th e reigning Champ and a Sunday aftern oo n picnic was the common bill o f fare. Steve Picatti 'was one of the few who made it over the to p of the 300.footer, although man y gave it a good shot. His sub-8 second run roused the gallery and just may bring these pe ople back for another show. T he p syche-up by these seas oned troops is q uite a specta cle . Picatti is pretty straightforward and doesn 't ta ke a lot o f ti me to get going and, like J ohn Lomanto , h e gets out o f the h ole pre tt y fast. Bob Swan son t ried h is first hill climb on a brand new 450 Moto Villa, and wo n the class with a near-250 foot ru n . Swanson imports Moto Villa bi kes and accessories and for an old Half-mile pilo t, he d id the hill OK. Leisuretech 's Mike Goodwin was also on han d to t ry the event on his Husky. It was h is first try at th is end of the sport and while perhaps not as successful as h is other endeavors, he got be tt er as ti me passed . Steve Faria had the :15U NOVice clas s pretty much too h imself desp ite a good effort by Ed Della Maggio re, while Distri c t 36 co m miss io ne r, Mike Van Lienden , survived hi s fir st eff o rt with a th ird . J t ' s h ard to be lieve. A co m missio ner t hat actually rid es. Frank Durso beat o ut Ron True fo r th e 250 Expert run , b y a mite , but Ron's brother J im, couldnn't quite ge t his OSSA going the right way and wa s ba ck in th e st andings. This wasn't the case for the Open Expert run where J im excels on th e Sam Arena Harl ey-D avi dson. J im went right o n over the top to take the win wi th Albert Ponti getting a slightly slo we r ti me for second . The ne xt hill climb event is scheduled for April 7.
