MISSION GORGE , CAL., FE B. 9
It w as, in away, a change of pace
- a return to an earlier day of
low -pressure intra-club trials. The
Bogwheelers of San Diego threw a
non-points warmup meet with a
min imu m of man power, ret urning
to the old practice of having the
competitors ride in groups, ex ch an ge scorecards, and judge each o ther
in t he traps. It's a practice encrusted
with tradition, dating b ack t o times
wh en the " girls" were harder to dragoon
i n t o sco re keeping duties. It puts
everyone on their honor and encourages
a certain amount of camaraderie within
the riding groups.
The trial was a trifle more difficult
than advertised - no case-bashers
maybe, but plenty of rocks, lots of
off-camber riding in and between
sections, and parts of the loop were a
?it scary to some of the Novices. Taking
lota account that some Novices arc
more raw than others, it was altoge ther
an interesting and chal lenging loo p to
ride.
Many of the "S uper Na mes" stayed
away to prepare fo r th e poin ts event o n
Sunday, bu t o ver 60 rid ers showed u p
to ride for grins (about tw ice th e
numb er th e club h ad ex pected). Among
this nu mber we re twelve entrants to the
new Trailbike class, with sections
tailored to mult i-purpose d irt bikes.
Twelve year o ld Dave Miller o n a T Y·SO
rode to a 4 2·point tie against R. Dost er
on a full -size Yamaha. They also tied at
20 cleans ea ch, and the scorers finally
broke the tie by co un tin g "ones," giving
Dos ter the class win. With t his kin d of
~te!est and competition developing, it
IS hkely th at the Trailbike class will
become a regular fix ture a t A.T.A.
poin ts events.
