The Borrego Rough100 By Charles Denova COYOTE WELLS, CAL. ,JAN . 27 Off-ro ad en thusiasts gathered again near the o utsk irts o f Plaster City fo r the ra ces sp onsored by the BORREGO 100 Asso ciation. Saturd ay was to be pro-race day. There was st rong wind and blowing sa nd, and only three pros showed up for the pro divisi on. (Co uld it have been th at th e BORREGO course is o ne o f the roughes t in off-road racin g???) In all fa irn ess. it m ust have bee n t he weather. Sunday was different , weatherwise, th at is. The morning dawn broke beautifully with a splash of co lor and almost n o wind. A welc omed chan ge from th e sand eatin g of the d ay before . Sunday was strictlv for th e Novi ce riders . Overall Borrego 100 w inner Mark Hanson takes the checkered after a long time out in the desert but not as lo ng as everybody behind hi m. S I arter Gordon Turley did an outstanding job of sending the racers off in pairs. A total of seventeen ( 17) starte d the 100 miler consisting o f two laps of 5 0 miles ea ch, over one of the roughest co urses in off-road ra cin g today . The "Mud hill s ' section was especially difficult. The course took it 's toll in men and ma chinery , with a 4 -hour cu t being meaningless to many racers. Of the 17 starters, six did not complete the first lap. Frank Medina c o u l d n ' t start his Yamaha 3 60, therefore , had 10 push his bike aw ay from the starting lin e. David Jordan 250 Elsinore had a seized engine. Jeff Cady, also riding a 250 Elsinore, first broke his chain followed by a seized piston. Both Jordan and Cady were down in site of Che ck Point 2 manned by John an d Karen Ber ard. Mark Carver, win ner of his clas s in the November Rough 100, had a seized engin e just aft er picking up his chit at Check Point 4 from Barbara and Frank Baldridge. Pat Bessie bent the front wheel of h is Yamaha 125. Craig Lin coln w as not ava ilable for explanation of his not completing the first lap. In the 0 to 125 cla ss.
