Whether or not it was still uprigh t after doing so depended on the skill of th e rider and the co nd it io n of the ground surface in between. It was fast, but the old Yamaha fishtails turned up over any bumpy su rface. One must remember that it is called "SC" (as in scrambles) and not MX (as in MX-o-cross). On smooth surfaces its power was usable, but the tires readily reminded you that they weren't an y good. Transferring your weight around a lot would help but good tires would help even more. Both bikes had oil injection but also needed premix. Some staffers always gru mble about this arrangement and some always like it. The SC-500 only has a four-speed gearbox, however. It has alloy rims, though. The 100's 19·inch front and IS-inch rear are steel. The 500's ignition is CD!, the 100 gets a magneto . Both have reed valves. Both have "thermal phase " rear shocks, the most noticeable characteristic of wh ich is the visible increase in unsprung weight. The sh oc ks aren't as good as they look. But then, ne ither is y o ur mother. Both of the bik es are fairl y priced. The 100 is fair to you at $600 and the 500 is fair to Yamaha at $1300. That's for a 500cc single with a four-speed that doesn't handle very well.
