Mike Devlin was fastest 350 GP Expert. Bob Endicott o n his Honda. On the seco nd lap. it ap peared as if Endicott was pulling up on Walti, but Bob must have been close to ten-tenths, as the Honda got into a real tank slapper up in the esses and scattered Honda and Endicott in all directions. Later, Neilson said Endicott is the only man he knows that could get off that hard and walk away from it. John Volkman completed another Yam aha swe ep by winning the combined 500 and Open Expert G.P. class. Fred Walti ran the Kawasaki in this class , in fact leading for three laps before pulling in fo r shock adjustments for preparation in the Open Production Race. Mike Devlin rode Volkman's Yamaha to the 350 Expert G.P. win over Rudy Galindo and Kevin Stafford. Hey, Pat, is that legal ? • The Cafe Racer dass attracted a bunch of fi rst-ti me racers. By Buzz Baty IRVINE, CAL., FEB. 3 You watch the rough and tumble action of motocross on Friday night, take a few flicks, watch the super, power-sliding, high-flying half milers and IT riders on Saturday, and take a few flicks, but today you get what has to be the most beautiful day of the year for 28 Pat Manning and his once a month CMC sanctioned road racing here at OCIR. Three types of racing, three breeds of racers, all hearing a different drummer, but all beautiful in their way. With the huge turn out, much larger than he expected, Manning was a bit late getting the racing underway today, but when he did, it got going with a brodacious cafe racer's go, which turned into a real duel between BMW riders Joe Minton and Steve Gerki. Joe held th e lead wire-to-wire, but at the final flag , he was only a wheel length in front of GerkL This was even though Gerki couldn't make turn one, and had to go straight ahead, and then double back turning right in tum one to almost do it to Minton at the end. Gary Bevans co mpleted just one of many Yamaha swee ps for the day. In fact, Yamaha swept the 125 Junior G.P., the 125 Expert G.P., the 250 Junior G .P., the 250 Expert G.P., the 350 Junior G.P., and the 350 Expert G.P . Bevans rode smoothly, but quickly and was never seriously challenged. A . face an d name, mu ch familiar to me in an o th er form of racing, was that of John Volkman , who was un til just a short time ago one of Southern Cali fo rn ia's better mo tocross riders. John collected a lot of pay ch ecks as a CMC ' cro sser . It looks like John is out to do the same thing as a road racer, running third to Bevans in the 250 Expert G.P. class on his very first outing on his just-acquired 250 water cooled Yamaha. Ex-editor of Motorcycle Weekly John Weed had his little 125 Yamaha G.P. out, but succumbed to mechanical ills, packing up and going home earl y . Somew here within the 250cc Production race, (whi ch in clu ded some 175s), last week 's ex-Ed itor of Cycle News, (an d th is week's new Associate Editor at Cycle Guide) , Art Friedman thrashed around, bu t didn't get to the finish lin e. About the only editorial writer/rider personage who did anything right and consistent all day, was Cook Neilson of Cycle Magazine . He kept his BMW going for the distance, but Cook was in absolutely no danger of catching flying Walti on his beautiful and , Fred screaming Z·I Kawasaki. Fred led wire-to-wire. Off the line during the drag race for turn one, it was absolutely no co ntest. As they came aro und , the tow er down in to turns five and six. Walti had a thirty bike-length lead over Fred Walti used to do pretty well on a Honda 500, but got tired of 750s out·powering him on the straights. So now he has a Kawasaki 900 and doesn't have t ha t t ro uble an ymore. He won Open Production. 100cc: 1. David Emde (Hod) ; 2 . John Holland ( K aw ) ; 3 . Robert Crecelius (Kaw). 125 Jr G .P. : 1.
