Sin cerely , PA UL FLAN D ERS Flanders Co. Pasadena, Calif. Husky unaware A letter to Harry Reasoner My husband and I (neither of wh om are "Internal Combustion Cowboys") have enjoyed eleven years of motorcycling, and your biased Report of Saturday. January 12th, was appalling, The f act that the motorcycle represents an economical means of transportation cannot be denied, which you didn 't; however, in this fuel gulping age, it cannot be overlooked. In addition, a motorcycle with a four-<:~cle engine emits considerably less pollution than a car. I t also provides a hobby in which the entire family can participate together (something conspicuously absent in this "generation gap" era. ) You poin ted out that driver education for motorcycle riders is being implemented, but what you failed to recognize is that au tomobile drivers need to be educated regarding their awareness and responsibility towards the 3,000,000 plus motorcycles on the road. The motorcycle is not inherently unsafe.. .i t will accelerate , stop, an d maneuver better than an auto mobile, while offering u nlimited visibility. Since, as y o u reported, the au tomobile is freq uently the cause of cycle accidents, deliberate for a moment on w hat the injury/death statistics would be if everyone rode m o torcy cles and cars were banned. If you become d icta tor and the fuel sh ortage. po lluti on' prob lem, lack o f parking spaces, and crowded fr eeways, are as prev alent probl em s as they are t oday, it mi ght b eh oo ve y ou to cons ide r it. MRS . DAVID HEWITT Wichita, Kansas If, what , and where This is an i f'-w h a t-a nd-where question. Do they have motorcycle races in Arkansaw(sic)? What type of races are they? Moto-X, enduro, what? What cities in the states are they held in? If there are only a few or a couple of cities that hold races, I would appreciate the names. Wh e t h er or n o t I mo ve to Arkanwhatchamakallit depends on the answer. MI KE ARKY Si mi, Calif. IVrite to Ms. R. Creed , c]o Cycle News Central, P.O. An example of common sense I am wri tin g th is Ie tt er because of th e num ber of emo tional resp onses you received co ncerni ng yo ur response to th e Hazlew o od le t ter , Beca use I h eartily en dorsed your re p ly I was more t han a lit tle co ncerned abo ut th e reactio n it provoked . I was also dis mayed t ha t you di d not make a further repl y to those who we re in agree ment with Hazlewood an d who misinterpreted your reply. Concerning th e accusation that you "would co ndone these actions:" I did no t sec it th at way. The issue would not see m t o be whe ther or not you co ndone the act (obviously it does clash with our p uritanical ideas) but w hether or not it should provoke a person into seriously considering arresting a person for so mething so totally insignificanL Mr. Hazelwood should consider arresting people for swearing in the pits ~d jay-walking, Unfortunately your te lhng hi m to go p lay with his handcuffs was a waste of space - I' m sure that is exactly what he already does in his spare time (If he is not fondling his revo lver ). Co ncerning Mr. Twigg's fea rs that this even t will further strengthen the Sierra Club idea that we are "screaming idiots out to tear up the countryside," again he demonstrates his lack of awareness. It is rather obvious t hat the Sierra Club is against unnatural acts rather than natural ones. The ra cer's actions obviously fall in the la tier category. Let me also say that I doubt if there are any active Sierra Club members, man, woman, or child, who in the course of a backpacking trip have not seen someone engaged in the natural act that ca used so m u ch ala rm in the ranks of t hose " liberated and freedom seeking" mo torcy clists . People like Hazlew ood, Woo lwine, Gr an ath , Whit e and Twiggs make me w ond er about taking up a new sport. Your presence as an example of common sense is impo r tan t in m y re main ing an avid mo torcy clist. RE X MCCLELLAN Davi s, Calif. Thanks to Papa Wealey fo r the men tion of my name regarding th e Ho nda offer, although I m u st confess there has been no offer. And as to my Husqvarna ride, this is m y own p erso nal machi n e. Husky has not eve n realized th a t they h ave man u factured an excellent enduro machi n e. I m ust commend Honda for recognition and support of enduros and th e p eople wh o compe te in them. Ho pefully, othe r manufacturers will foll o w suit. R.B . Kn ap p La Mirada , Calif. Enduro Rid er No.3 River bottom real I am writing in protest to Papa Wealey's state ment doubting the authenticity of the report on t he first Ann ual River Bottom Gran Prix. As a participant in both Inaugural and Jan. 20th events I wo uld like to than k Sun Engineering (who made th e w hole th ing possible) fo r a great time . I am sure there are no hard feelings towards Papa, we all know what it m u st be like to be old and senile. We will b e holding a padded ro ckin g chair in reserve for the old gent if he happens to be in the area for the nex t event (still unscheduled) so he may witness it for hi mself.
