OF CHAMP) TONGUE By Margie Kissam ~ SN UG FITTING A L L WEATHER CUFF SOFT GLOVE LEATHE R WITH FOA M FILLING LAS VEGAS, N EV., J AN. 2 0 It was a dreary overcast morn ing, no t at all th e usual sunshiny day here in Las Vegas, as we headed out Blue Diam ond Road towards Pahrump fo r the Chargers West Hare Scrambles. T he race was billed as the "Energy Crisis Hare Scrambles" since it was lo ca ted FOAM PADDED FRONT RACE PROVEN BUCKLES ...... HEAT RESISTANT AND WATER REPELLANT FINISH less th an tw en ty miles from Las Vegas and the four loops w er e o nly ab o u t sixteen mil e s each for a tota l of 64 mil es, sh o rt Ior this t ype o f race. T h e s p o nso ring club, (Char gers West ), is a group o f young hot- shoes who u sually take h ome more th an th eir sh are of the tr ophies. S ince they w ere not racing, trophy positions were wide open . The Chargers tried last fall to put on a race in this same area , bu t ra n in to last minu te co m plicat ions wi th the BLM and had to m ove to an o th er lo ca tio n with o nly a couple o f days no tice. As we turned off the h igh way o n to the dirt road leading to the pits, it was eas y to see wh y th is was their ch osen lo catio n. It loo ked like great terrain for desert racing, and from a spectator's poin t of view wa s really picture post car d m at erial, with co lo rfu l red rock hills to o ne side an d sn ow cap pe d m oun tain s to the north . At ten a. m, 1 14 eager riders we re o n th e st arting line. T hey were off, b ut no t in a cloud of dust ! The desert was reall y set tle d fro m last week 's rain and sn ow . Experts and Ama teurs sta r te d first and No vices ab o ut t hre e minutes later. Bobby Davidson. on h is 25 0 Yam ah a, took an ear ly lead and co mp le ted the first lo op about three mi n utes ahead o f Ler o y Kyger o n a 25 0 S uzu ki. Leroy rode an incredi ble race, main tainin g second place o n all fo ur loops, ta king second overall and first 250 Amateur. A t the end of the second lap Chuck Ru sh , o n a 4 00 Husky, was h ot o n Leroy's tail. b ut was not able t o tak e h im until t he final lap when Chuck took o ver in the win ner 's circle. One of th e best races of the d ay was in t he 250 Novice class. In t he fir st la p it was Sid Tarbe rt, 25 0 Yamah a, bein g chased b y Ted Fly nn o n a Hu sk y, with Warren Birchett o n a Ho nda and Bob Smith , 25 0 Bultaco , rig ht behind. Ted too k th e lead o n th e secon d lap , foll ow ed b y Bob a nd Warren . It was cat and m ou se th e next two lap with Bo b Smith coming o u t wit h th e win , with the others very nearl y ridi n g wheel to wheel be hin d him. Jack Johnso n, o n his 250 Hu sky , took second 250 Expert th e hard way. T he first lap he was 4 2 nd o verall. Second lap he made it up to 22 nd and o n the third u p to 12th. Last lap fo un d Jack eigh th o verall and second in class. He really had to do so me " cookin '." The heart brea ker for the d ay was Bo b by Davidso n , 25 0 Yamaha, w ho rod e t he firs t t hree lap s with a lea d o f about three m inutes. On th e last lap Bob by 's sile ncer ca me o ff and bro ke some spokes, and k nocked o ff his chain. La ter he los t a shock .
